re: Heather Headley as Elphaba ?

Margo, my god, I'm in awe. The way you deconstructed Heather was masterful, and I say that as someone who is a FAN of Ms Headley's.

As to for Loretta, she is one of the most consistently excellent perfomers working. Too bad that nobody's gonna write a role for a plus-size woman her age.

Did anyone see her in "Kingdom Come"???
Hilarious work!
And it's actually quite sad, with the amazing voice she has, she hasn't done much recording work. - Dreamgirls and some out of print Arlen compilation...
Why "Big Deal" was never recorded, I'll never know.
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

Well it seems that Loretta might return to Broadway in a featured role in Purlie. I hope so because I'm a fan of both her AND Paulette Ivory.

And all props to Lillias AND Loretta for their massive talents. But what's with all the speculation about how great they would be in roles that there isn't a snowball's chance in hell of them getting?

I always hoped that Loretta would play Caroline in CAROLINE, or CHANGE but sadly the wonderful show did not get the life it deserved.

roquat- Completely agree with you. Loretta was perfect in Crash. And has anyone watched her in the now-ended Boston Public TV show? She stole every scene she was in.

Tennessee--

Oh, look, there was no real speculation about Lillias or Loretta ever ACTUALLY being cast as Elphaba (though, DAMN, if it somehow happened, they got my $100 for a ticket) -- it's just fun to imagine those voices doing that score in some context.

I always wished that CAROLINE had somehow caught on with audiences because I have a LONG list of singer-actresses I would KILL to see play it (meaning no disrespect whatsoever to the great Tonya Pinkins): Loretta Devine, Lillias White, Mary Bond Davis, the aforementioned Heather Headley ....... and I must say that I'll die happy if I ever get a chance to see Jennifer Holliday rip that score to shreds some day (just the thought of what Holliday could do to "Lot's Wife" gives me chills).

Oh, Headley as Lorrell sounded nuts. Thats an awful performance on a recording. It breaks my heart, too, because the rest of that concert is sensational..

I wish Caroline lasted too, because I was going to try out for it re: Heather Headley as Elphaba ?

Holy crap. MArgo, I love you. I have always hated Tonya Pinkins (ok, not hated) but I was floored by her performance in Caroline. Still, when I left, I turned to my ex and said, "Jennifer Holliday must sing Lot's Wife."

re: Heather Headley as Elphaba ?

To get back on topic, I'd like to say that I truly love Heather as a performer. However, I am under no illusions that she has a small ego.

That's why I seriously doubt that she would take a replacement role in Wicked or most other productions. Even though many may think it egomaniacal, I suspect that she believes that she's entitled to original roles.

The only way I can see her changing her mind about that is if her career goes into an abrupt downward spiral.

But even if her head is a bit swelled, it's probably not as big as it once was. The failure of her album to reach her multi-platinum expectations seems to have humbled her a bit.

I think it also made her mad enough to aim for some really impressive stuff on her next release.
