Count me as another who's yet to see Heather but who very much enjoyed Jennifer's performance. Was she nearly as great as Danielle and Cynthia? No. But Danielle is a revelation as Sophia and Cynthia is giving one of the greatest performances ever. But I would hardly call her performance wooden. She was truthful, strong, and sexy and it was wonderful to see her for once in the glamour part.
After you see Heather you may realize how wooden Jennifer was. I didn't care for Jennifer when I saw her. I revisited to see Heather and my friend was blown away. He said he didn't realize just how little Hudson did with the role until he saw Heather's electric performance.
Saw JHUD back in April, liked most of her performance -- very much, indeed. Saw HH last night. What a revelation! Every ounce of her being was Shug Avery. I whole heartedly agree with others that have said if she originated the role she would have been nominated - and maybe even dethroned Renee. While I wouldn't have thought possible, she brought out even MORE from Erivo.
I mentioned in another thread, that I got my tickets only two days ago, and had quite the selection to choose from, many empty seats throughout the house. TDF must be doing a great job as the house seemed full last night, and the energy was amazing. The cast seemed truly touched by the adoration they were receiving during curtain calls.
So glad to have caught this a second time...this round with my 16 year old son. While it was his idea to see it from having watched the Tonys, he really didn't know much about it. He was pretty blown away by it, too.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
Not even close. Headley looked better, sang better and actually acted, She also is full of charisma and you can;t help but be drawn to her.
These are all ESSENTIAL elements for the role of Shug Avery. They way the other characters talk about her, and react to her REQUIRES this.
The show didn't make sense with Hudson, and it won;t with Holliday. It's sad, because Erivo is out of this world, and Brooks is great too, as well as all the supporting cast.
It doesnt make sense to have your weak link be such an important part of the show.
