Just as I feared, I was terribly underwhelmed by this performance. Jonathan Whitton did what I like to call 'elphabize' the role. He did all these unnecessary riffs in all of the songs (which you could barely hear because the band was so loud). He played the role too stereotypically 'drag queen'. Hedwig is NOT just a bitchy queen. She has more depth than that. What I like about John Cameron Mitchell is that as Hedwig, I thought of him as a human being-not just a transvestite. The acting was also very poor, and he really didn't project any kind of emotion at all. I also thought the whole 'I can't say my own name or wear a blonde wig because of copyright infringement' was very tacky and bitchy. Though admittedly, I was shocked by the red wig!
I did like Yitzhak. The girl had a very nice belty rocker voice for the role.
I thought the lead singer of the opening band (Ziggy Starlir and the Spiders from Venus) would have made a better Hedwig.
I ADORE Hedwig and am sad to say I was very disappointed seeing it live for my first time. Yes, I am extremeley partial to JCM, but this performance was just totally lackluster and unfeeling. They need to cast someone who has a more raw voice, and can actually portray human emotions.
