Pippin
Scottsboro Boys
Kinky Boots
Here Lives Love (original cast and concept album)
Hedwig (although the off-Broadway is better)
I agree that West Side Story is beautiful, especially on SACD
Fun Home (Please Please listen to this)
Next To Normal
Into The Woods OBC/2002 Revial or the Movie soundtrack, each have there benefits
Violet
Bonnie & Clyde (If you like Wildhorn music)
Evita OBC (No question)
Sweeney Todd
The Last 5 Years (Original Off-Broadway recording only!)
Side Show (OBC)
Peter Pan (Again OBC, or if its easier the NBC Live recording)
Started to listen to "The Last Ship" recently and its quite good so i'd give it a listen.
Tried not to repeat ones that have been said or that are really obvious like RENT, Les Mis, Phantom etc. But Please listen to Fun Home, I've never listen to a album and fell in love so quick. The emotional story and beautiful score just brings a tear to my eye each time. Do yourself a favour and listen to it. Especially before it hits Broadway this Spring.
here's an oldie but goodie...the OBC of THE ROAR OF THE GREASEPAINT-THE SMELL OF THE CROWD...amazing number of familiar songs in this one...and i think very under appreciated these days...
I started my collection by getting ALL the Tony Winning Best Musical shows' cast recording and the same for Tony Winning Best Score.
If they didn't make an original broadway cast recording, then get the original london cast. Ex: Kiss of the Spiderwoman, Billy Elliot, The Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard (Los Angeles, since most that cast WAS the OBC)
The Last Five Years ***** (the new one and the original are both wonderful)
Bridges Of Madison County
Big Fish

HEDWIG has one of my favorite albums ever
