I wish I could have caught it. It seemed like it would be a really memorable theatrical experience, and the title song made Ruthie Ann Miles a permanent fixture on my iPad. I was thrilled when she was cast as Lady Thiang- and floored. After all, going from Fatboy Slim to Richard Rodgers...now THAT is vocal versatility.

I loved it. I'm still kicking myself for waiting until the very last weekend to see it. Jaycee Macapugay was a good Imelda, but I'm sure Ruthie Ann Miles was amazing. I regret not being able to see her in the role.
it was definitely an amazing theatrical experience! I really wish I hadn't been so closed minded about it earlier on in the runs.
After the closing show, I was in the ridiculously long line for coat check and started chatting with someone who seemed to be friends with several cast and creative members (because they kept stopping to talk to him.) He mentioned that the next plans were to mount the show in a different city (LA or San Francisco.) I would love for that to be true!

I've just in the last few weeks first heard the concept recording and cast recording. I prefer the the concept album; although it claims to be all-star it definitely is not -- not that that's a bad thing -- but who the heck are Shara Worden, Charmaine Clamor and Kate Pierson (and about ten other ladies who are all very talented)?? There's really about 5 big stars on the album, but the whole thing is so fantastic from Florence Welch opening with the sublime title song to ending with Tori Amos and Cyndi Lauper on the wonderful "Why Don't You Love Me?" I listened to it once without having any clue what the heck was going on, then read the booklet which had a song-by-song outline.
I was slightly disappointed by the cast recording, it was missing that pop sound I loved on the album, and the pop voices...I couldn't get used to Ruthie Ann Miles as Imelda, I thought she sounded too proper with her terrific diction, which is normally something I applaud, but it was distracting for the character, being a girl who grew up in poverty and then married well. I guess I expected more sass from her after listening to the pop album. The first disc is stronger than the second, and some songs I enjoyed immensely despite their not making much sense (everything from Walk Like a Woman to The Whole Man are all nonsensical) but thankfully the entire album has such an infectious disco beat it makes you want to dance. I'd rather go to a concert of the concept album than see the show! (although i read online that the show was basically just a concert in a discotheque) Great job to Fatboy Slim and David Byrne.

Yes haha it is rather funny that they are all in The King and I now. But perhaps afterwards they could bring this to Broadway?

haha ohh, i forgot that Ricamora was in Here Lies Love (since I listened to the cast recording without a booklet). I think it speaks to a lack of diversity in the community.

I guess that is one way to describe a 360-degree immersive experience if you're trying to be reductive.

Well since I said I didn't see the show I don't know how I was being reductive of something I didn't see, that's simply what I had inferred from what I read online. And Smidge, I now feel ridiculous for forgetting Kate was in the B-52's. I hang my head in shame! I was born in 1992 so I don't know them very well beyond Rock Lobster and Love Shack.

I saw HHL, but from the seating section overlooking the dance floor- which greatly colored my perception of it. Without the excitement of the club immersion, the show's seams are very, very visible. I walked out thinking it was an entertaining event, and an impressive feat of staging and design, but not necessarily a good piece of theatre.
That being said, I think the music is a lot of fun. Again, not particularly deep, but entertaining.

Imelda was born when the Philippines was a US Commonwealth. Diction and grammar was something people paid attention to. To this day, even in impoverished areas, you will find that everyone still speaks or understand English (though with localized accents that have developed in later years).

There is a rather long YouTube trailer from the Public run that shows the stagework, there are all the reviews, etc. There's definitely a lot of information available to show it was far more than a concert.
Even the fact that David Byrne seemingly showed up often to work crew or dance in with the crowd was pretty crazy.
