as one who hates HSM, I find all of your reactions more annoying than HSM.

if it comes to Broadway then it comes to Broadway. it potentially expands the Broadway audience (something LEGALLY BLONDE + SPRING AWAKENING has done), offers more jobs to young performers, and keeps the teen age group engaged in a positive message through the medium of song and dance.

What is so hard to understand? Can't get over your diva-ness to support a good influence for your kids?

I have a sister who is right in the target age group, and when she heard about number 4 a day ago, I thought she was going to hurt herself.

Ok, anyways. I think what really ticks most people out is that HSM is not a good movie, but it is touted as the best thing ever. I think people are enthusiastic about younger people getting involved in theatre, but it upsets them to see that the introduction is a poorly produced knock off to the real thing. And some kids will never know, or care that there is more. I think the crux of the issue it's annoying that the thing currently representing the under appriciated artform of theatre, is crap.

Well without it, there'd be basically nothing, so..

If it inspires even one person to audition for their high school musical, isn't it a good thing?

It's kind of like Wicked. I think that show is trash, but it makes money on Broadway, creating available moneys for things I might enjoy later. Win win.

Broadway=business first and foremost. It's always been that way.

I agree.

Not Barker - I understand that side of the argument but for theatre supporters, it doesn't make sense.

sure it might not be THE greatest example but it's still a positive influence. It's better than nothing.

It's not hurting anyone, other than those pathetic theatre queens who can't get over their ego's just because it isnt a GREY GARDENS or soemthing.... puhlease sweetheart.

Yes, well. I think to be annoyed by the above fact and perhaps the "show" itself, is a very valid fact. I hope it does bring new people into the theatre, but I equally hope they can un-learn the misconceptions that HSM may teach and that they can find their own voice in the theatre.

I agree.

and I don't think you can blame HSM for bring "misconceptions" ... this is how their Franchise has chosen to approach the whole concept.

in the end, you must leave it up to the audience to find their own voice - no one is stopping them! Oh my...

Maybe if it were to come to Broadway, they could give the gay brother a coming out of the closet scene, ending with a gay conga line(which bored audience members would have the option of joining)leading out of theatre and towards a near-by gay bar,

Edited to add on that part about a gay conga line.

The tour got nice reviews... it was called out as mindless and bubblegum.. but it also pointed out the show is just plain fun and not meant for crusty older people.. and the theatres were filled with 6 year olds loding onto every word... how often can you see that? So we have SITPWG and the kids can have HSM and opefully someday want to see SITPWG.
