MTI rates shows that it licenses. I think Samuel French does as well. That's probably what the rating comment referred to.

I've seen absolutely brilliant HS productions of SWEENEY TODD and
SWEET CHARITY. I'm sure many people would consider then "inappropriate"

Well, that must be pretty new, I've never noticed it before. However, as there is no 'rating system' that's really just the opinion of MTI (or whomever)

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

If the school sets their theater standards based on the ratings of licensing companies, it's no longer just a meaningless opinion. It's how the school tries to preempt controversy.

"Sweeney Todd, August: Osage County to name a few."

Wow. How did you handle the "gory" parts of Sweeney Todd?

No it's not. There is no standard for the self imposed 'ratings' of MTI. A parent that wants to make a stink, will make a stink. It is still up to the admin/director to make the judgement call. I'm not saying it's a bad idea as a starting point, however -- but I'd just be curious to their criteria.

Handled the gore? Not so difficult really. We used red lights at each throat slit.

I have no issue with language. I do have an issue with overt sexuality in high school productions. Yes, high schoolers are sexual beings, but the truth is that they're being directed by a mature adult who should know better. I have seen productions in this area where I thought "if this was on my hard drive, I'd be arrested." Totally skeevy.

Oh, the best high school shows have full-frontal nudity, realistic simulations of graphic sex, blasphemy (of all religions) and scat.

I draw the line, however, at foul language and violence. There's no place for that in a high school.
