Holiday Gifts for Theater Lovers

Holiday Gifts for Theater Lovers

Since the shopping season has officially begun, I just put together this post of suggestions, which you might want to forward to the gift-givers in your life.
It's in no way comprehensive. Categories include: gift certificates for tickets, hottest tickets, theater subscriptions, the three best places for plays and theater books, and a glimpse into "Broadway Baubles" One of my favorite weird items for sale this year: For $2.95, you can get "Shakespeare Insult Gum"
Any specific gift -- or places to get gifts -- left out that you'd like to mention?

No you weren't. As usual, you are just trying to get traffic to your blog.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

A good addition, thanks Aaron. It's important to point out that many theaters sell plays themselves -- not just Soho Rep but Signature and Playwrights Horizons.
August Wilson's plays have such terrific dialogue, they're a pleasure to read.

Yeah, I'd like to read them as well--but it's nice to have a performance to see after reading to get a better sense of the material. Which is why that Beckett box set is one of the best things to ever happen.

I completely agree with you about that Beckett DVD box set of EVERY ONE OF HIS PLAYS. Thanks for reminding me about it.
19 plays put on film by 19 directors, including Atom Egoyan and Karel Reisz and Anthony Minghella, performed by Julianne Moore, Milo O'Shea, Jeremy Irons, John Hurt, Alan Rickman, even Sir John Gielgud and Harold Pinter!
It's called Beckett on Film: 19 Films X 19 Directors. I just checked on Amazon, and it's still available -- even though it's nine years old. Still pricey too.

Another book that would make the perfect gift for the theater obsessed is Showbiz, A Novel. Its pretty light reading, but its written by a Broadway producer and supposedly gives a really accurate (though fictional) account of the behind-the-scenes business of Broadway. Personally, I really liked it and its a total must read for theater-nerds (like myself!)

Plus it seems to be getting good reviews:
“The devil doesn’t wear Prada, he runs Broadway!Part modern romance, part chilled martini chic-lit date, Showbiz is a perfect escapist read.” – Book Geek Reviews

“Will have you dreaming of Broadway, even if you’re miles and miles away!“ – TheaterMania

Anyway, I added a link if anyone's interested in checking it out.
