I've seen As Is, and can be an excellently done one act (that's how it was performed, not sure if that's the original form) but that's my suggestion.

"It does what a musical's supposed to do. It takes you to another world, and it gives you a little tune to carry with you in your head for when you're feeling blue."

There are no openly, avowedly gay characters in any of Albee's major plays.

Although The Goat comes close. Well, it is societal transgression.

And The Goat has a very suggestive father-son moment. For a school, it might be a bit of a problem.

Zanna, Don't! Very funny. Takes place in a town where being gay is the norm.

Many of McNally's plays would be suitable for the subject matter. His plays are, at turns, funny and serious. Look for information here

Be sure to select the approprite licensing fees for non-professional production.

Depending upon the age of the audience and the constraints placed on you by the school system and the community, you will want to look carefully at the content of the plays suggested.

Zanna, Don't! is wonderful (at least the songs are, i havent seen it yet). Some of my friends really like it though.

"Let the little girl go, and that poor little dog? Dodo." That's my favorite line in the whole show (Wicked). My next favorite line is "Oh! It seems the artichoke is steamed."

You could also try The Last Session.

Okay, I'm the composer but it's published by Samuel French and we had an off-Broadway run. The lead character is gay and he's recording an album in a basement studio. It's very easy to stage and has a modern score.

Oh MargoChanning, thanks for reminding me of "The Lisbon Traviata." I saw that at the Music Center in LA many years ago. Nathan Lane and Richard Thomas were the stars and I really enjoyed it.

Mamet's Boston Marriage is a FANTASTIC play about lesbians in Victorian times. Two really meaty roles for female actresses, as well. Don't know who to go to for it... but I'm sure you could find out easily enough.
