Is there a REALLY good, homosexual themed play with a gay lead character?

If so, can anyone give me titles? My school is doing this Gay and Lesbian festival thing and we want to start off the weekend with a funny, yet also serious show. Can anyone help?

do musicals count?

Idina: Somehow I got myself to the stage, came out at the end of the show, and I had some kind of closure.
Some guy: You looked great!
Idina: Thanks...I WAS SO HIGH! 8/21/05

Yes, there are lots...unfortunately many of them aren't "school appropriate." My personal favourite (and always will, I suspect) is Tony Kushner's Angels in America. Also, Terrence McNally's Love! Valour! Compassion!...both of those are AIDS plays but pretty much deal with them in their confines of the gay community (I know, I know...AiA is about so much more than that, however a big chunk...). Anyway...AiA is very serious and funny in parts, where L!V!C! is very funny and serious at the same time.

Plays...shorter plays, at that. LVC sounds good. Who publishes it?

I really liked The Normal Heart I saw it in NYC and have read it three times since then.

You can find it on amazon for like $8, but if you mean who you can write to get the performance rights to, I don't know. A theatre teacher at your school should know, or be able to find out for you, though.

if musicals count Falsettos is probably the best. marvin is the lead character and left his wife and child for another man.

But I won't live alone in a house of regret.

Look at Torch Song Trilogy--each act can be done as a separate play--the 3rd act being the best, perhaps.

Also, look at Harvey's play Safe Sex.

Jeffrey (silly but really not that long of a play)

If I was at home I could give you some titles, but I have sevearl anthologies of queer plays and solo pieces. One is is called Solohomo I think. I want to say that I purchased most of them at Barnes and Nobles.

I LOVE that play. One of my favorite reads. You know...it's funny...you don't even know there is a gay plot until the second act. This would be a great show for you to do. Not a lot of cast members...really one unit set if I remember correctly.

FIRST COUPLE, written by Jefferson Beeker, about the first gay president.
