"Please. Why ask advice. Just go see the same sugar coated musicals over and over that all the tourists will no doubt flock to. No need to see anything unique."
The reason I asked because I have heard so many mixed opinions about the show and wanted a little more info. On the contrary I don't prefer "sugar coated musicals" I prefer musicals that are different --- I loved Taboo, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and several others.
To all those who gave me advice. Thanks a bunch!!

I agree! Edmund Lyndeck is one of my personal favorites now ever since I heard "Johanna." Now, I'm really sad. I hope that it's in the revival. I can't imagine why it wouldn't be put in. I can't wait to see this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am willing to bet big money that they will put it back in. It was put in the concert at Lincoln Center. and every other version I've seen since the original tour, including the revival in '89.
I am really not all this thrilled about this. I just don't want to see this amazing show and the actors also playing instruments. And I like Patti and everything, but not as Mrs. Lovett. I thought Cyndi would have been a great Lovett. Lovett is a character who is crazy, and has a few screws loose. Sounds like Cyndi to a tee. But I will probably go see this cause I love Cervis and Jacoby. Not to mention it is one of my favorite shows.

The Judge's "Johanna" was cut from the original Broadway production after the first preview because Hal Prince didn't like it. To quote Prince: "I took it out. We did it at the first preview, and I said 'It's gone tomorrow.' I don't get it; I don't know how to do it. . . . And furthermore, I don't like it, so it wasn't there."
Sweeney Todd is a masterpiece.
I agree that the judge's song can be important for plot/character development and it helps us understand why Johanna is so repulsed by him, but I think the song "Poor Thing" does help to sum up the judge and the beatle(sorry if I spelled that wrong) pretty well. At least in that instance. While the song helps us understand the judge better I am personally not a great fan of it. I don't know why, but I just never really liked the song to begin with. Even with Edmund Lyndeck singing it(like his version) I just never liked the song itself. Just one of those weird things.
I agree with costume girl. I am not excited about the actors playing their own instruments a la cabaret. while it is a very interesting idea, the orchestrations for this show are among the most amazing and intricate ever. this show needs to be heard with a huge orchestra to get the full effect of the beauty of the music, not with what may feel like chamber musicians. hopefully, they will have a more full orchestra in the pit to help the sound.
Hope you're right, doodlenyc. The first production I ever saw of Sweeney (a mediocre regional production) cut it.
Think Edmund Lyndeck is still up for the part? He was still playing a dirty old man in "Road Trip," after all.
