Many hotels in that area.
Here's what I do:

www.hotelqt.com Special Summer Rate code "hot"
I have stayed there 2 times.
People on this board have recommended the Radio City Apartments.

Hotel Edison

Courtyard Marriott Midtown East (866 3rd Ave)....EXCELLENT VALUE. It's a short subway ride away from the theaters.
I've stayed at the Paramount Hotel, the Crowne Plaza Times Square, the EconoLodge Times Square, and Radio City Apartments. You really couldn't go wrong with any of these. The Paramount and EconoLodge have TINY rooms, however. I would check the websites that Steve2 recommended. I would also recommend Hotwire and Priceline, if you're not afraid to take a small gamble. I booked the Paramount Hotel through Hotwire for August and got a great price.

The Hampton Inn on 52nd and 8th is really nice. The rooms are big for NYC, and the price includes a full breakfast buffet in the morning. (hot foods, not just muffins and bagels)
Whatever you do, don't stay at the Best Western in times square, its cheap, but its by far the worst hotel I have ever stayed in.
I would second the recommendation to take a chance with Priceline. I have twice bid on rooms (Midtown West, 3 stars) -- once I got Guest Quarters, and once the Paramount, and both times the price was about 1/2 the posted price. If you stick with Midtown West 3 or 4 stars, I don't think you can go terribly wrong.
Portland Square if you want nice but bare-bones. :)

The Paramount on 46th is almost always listed on Priceline. Their rooms that are available at a discount price are VERY TINY, and look outward on an air shaft. My partner and I recently stayed there, and were amused that our double room was about 400 square feet smaller than the prison cell that was giving Paris Hilton claustrophobia.
Here are a few of the places you can stay doubletree, hotel edison, marriot Marquis ,crown plaza, manhattan club, they aare more if you look at new york travler books or just google hotels theatre district-new york city..something like that.

I always recommend that anyone visiting New York City for any reason should check out the Gershwin Hotel. It's not in the theatre district, but the 15 block walk from its E 27th St. location to Times Square is a straight shot up Broadway.
Whether you're budgeted for $50 a night stay in a hostel, or a $250 a night suite, the place can accommodate you if you book well in advance.

I've been to 3 in my stays there.
Gershwin--nice and pleasant but a bit of a walk
Milford Plaza--I had a nice stay but I've heard stories.
Ramada New Yorker--would be my choice when I return. Very nice and clean, nice people, conveniently located (by Madison Square Garden).

the difference is that you can carry on a conversation with real people who have real opinions about real hotel stays here on a message board. try asking tripadvisor about the chicken salad sandwiches at the 24 hour deli around the corner from the gershwin hotel.

if you don't mind walking crosstown a few long blocks, the Skyline on 10th Ave. at 50th St. has nice big rooms for a decent price.
The Gershwin looks pretty cool. I actually stay at a friend's place in that area on 25th when in town. Love the walk up to the theatre district. And it really isn't a long walk at all. I always like to walk through Bryant Park on the way.

a "conversation"????
This or any other message board is not a conversation.
The reviews there at TripAdvisor gives a BIGGER PICTURE.
And for what it's worth, the NYC portion of the TripAdvisor message boards is very active.
Someone mentioned the Hotel Edison. The last time I stayed there the bath towel was filthy with more than a few strands of hair in it. I wasn't sure if it really was "clean".

I liked the Park Central.
^ I second the park central across from carnegie, stayed there and loved it. Nice gym inside too and the diner across the street is tasty! I booked my trip package on LastMinuteTravel.com
