I don't know if it could be on the Broadway level but I'd love to see what Jen Cody cold do with the role. SHe 's perfect for all the humor of Fanny, and certainly quirky enough. WOuld be interesting to see if she could pull off the more mature aspect of the role.

As for Kermit playing the role, I'd like to hear him do "People"
No to Sutton... She may be a bit old, but I'd love to see Ana G. do it... She's one of those dark horses...

Leslie who?
I don't think producers are going to move ahead with a star vehicle starring someone the general public has never heard of.

Well, Streisand wasn't exactly Ethel Merman when she played Fanny.

True - but today's Broadway is a completely different animal than it was then.
My vote goes to Ana Gasteyer as well.

Streisand's Broadway replacement, Mimi Hines, actually played more performances of the show than Streisand did. And the road tour did very well with Marilyn Michaels (who was very reminiscent of Streisand).
The trick with the show is that when that lady gets up and sings "I'm the Greatest Star" you better believe it. You did with Streisand. Midler could have done it too.
And think of the ladies who were considered or turned it down: Mary Martin, Anne Bancroft.
There's just not a crop of Broadway-based stars like that today.

I think I would believe Ms. Block - and maybe even a couple of others. The problem is, the general public wouldn't if they didn't recognize the name - at least that's what the producers think. Too bad Stephanie didn't appear on Americal Idol.
Maybe this won't work because she's too associated with Barbra, but Lauren Frost, who played Barbra as a kid in her TIMELESS concerts, would be incredible! But, she's not well known enough.
I think the key to this, as many wiser people than me on this board have said everytime this topic comes up, is to get a complete unknown who will blow everyone away and for whom this will be her star-making turn. They'd have to stunt cast the part of Nicky for sure, though.
That's true.
FUNNY GIRL is a nearly impossible show to revive.
Not only is it a thoroughly mediocre show (other than it's spectacular score), but FUNNY GIRL is so synonymous with Streisand that to make a revival a success, you would need another newly discovered star to really bring people in. As we all know, stars aren't born on Broadway anymore. I could see a revival of FUNNY GIRL getting decent reviews, but without some sort of break though, revelatory, career-changing performance from a certain individual, it will barely succeed. And then, even if it does, anyone who EVERY plays Fanny Brice in fUNNY GIRL professionally EVER again will ALWAYS be compared to Streisand. And as we all know, there will NEVER be anyone better.
It's tricky territory.
Leslie or Sutton would work for me. I don't believe that Sutton is too pretty and can come off as awkward very well.
I would just like to see this show revived because it is one of the funniest shows ever written. They can fix the book if need be but the score, ah.. I love those songs. I love Barbara's singing but I'm sure, others can play this part well.
I just watched, "Beaches" last week. It always makes me cry. Bette was so beautiful in it too. I am hoping to catch her in Las Vegas. Maybe next year.

One name comes to mind. Diana DeGarmo. She's young, she was very funny as Penny in "Hairspray", can sing that score and even if she's not a big star yet, thirty million people know the name. If she had opened "Legally Blonde" as Elle, it would have been a smash, not just successful.

About the book of the show. One of the producers of the show was Brice's son-in-law and kept a very tight control of the book not allowing anything he thought would be detremental to her. He edited the book a lot.
I am a HUGE Sutton Foster fan, but I think she's wrong for the role. Sutton certainly has spunk and a sense of humor, but not the fanny (fannie? sp?) brice spunk or sense of humor. It's really difficult to see anyone else but Barbra doing it!

Wow, whoever said Diana DeGarmo had a great idea. I would never think of her, but she would be wonderful!
Vicki Lewis would have been a perfect choice for a revival years ago.
She's got the look, the voice, the presence, and the comic chops, and her semi-recognizable status in the nineties would have helped her case to play the role.
I'd still love to hear her sing the score.

Ana has actually played Fanny before. From what I heard, she was very, very good. Still, I think she is a bit too old to play it now. Wicked was even a stretch for her (Act One anyway). Still, she is a great actress and a very powerful singer!
Fanny Brice does need to be an "ugly duckling".
