If Bernadette Peters can play Annie Oakley, a role for which she was about 25 years too old, and Cheno can play school-age Galinda, there's no reason Gasteyer can't play Fanny Brice.
Unless you play the entire thing like a satire, nobody in their right mind is going to believe that Ana Gasteyer is anywhere near the ages of 19-29.
My bet is that it will not be revived until Streisand dies.

Someone.
Julia Murney? Are they going to change the title to Funny Boy?
I agree Foster is the wrong look but I'd love to hear her sail through the score and the comic numbers would shine. Block seems a tad too old looking for Fanny.
Kritzer is the right choice. I disagree about her having no star quality though. She managed to turn her tiny Legally Blonde role into a 2nd lead. And I think she's charming in Catered Affair.
I love Sutton Foster, but if you're referring to her Actor's Fund performance of "I'm the Greatest Star," well it just fell flat. IMO, the only person in that concert who came close to lighting a spark or showing something different as Fanny was Lillias White singing "Don't Rain on My Parade." And there are just too many reasons why that wouldn’t work. Because Streisand immortalized the role on film, it will be nearly impossible to find someone who is the same "mold" as her to bring Funny Girl to Broadway and to clear the memory of Streisand.

Switz,
Thank you for making my night.
When you said "Me", I looked at your avatar, saw Kemit the Frog, and imagined him singing "Don't Rain on My Parade."
It was a beautiful image.
Parks - if we're thinking of the same video, I love it too!
What about that cute, talented kid who played Bette Midler's younger self in "Beaches". I have no idea how old she is now. Can't recall the name.
I don't think Stephanie Block's personal manager is fit to judge her a good choice for the role.
Mayim Bialik of Blossom fame. WOW. I forgot how much I love that movie.
Glory of Love
Wow, thanks for that, Popular! Been a long time. I always thought that kid would be the next BARBRA! I know she did some kind of TV show, but why oh why no Bway?? No Shiksa quotient? Ah, the unanswered questions of life.
Murney? Too old for the role as well. And her name is not the first one that comes to mind when I read the word "funny." As much as I think she's quite a talented performer.
And I do agree with jewishboy, I don't really enjoy Foster's "I'm the Greatest Star," perhaps because Streisand's magnificent rendition is the only thing I have to compare it too. I enjoy Murney's "People," as well as Krakowski's "Sadie, Sadie" from the concert in addition to Lillias White, but I just think that at this point Leslie Kritzer (who has star quality to spare, unlike Block or Bean) is the most perfect choice for the role.
I would just love to see Ana Gasteyer sing the role. I love her in REEFER MADNESS.
I love Sutton but I can't see her doing that part.
Without a doubt, Leslie Kritzer has to do it. Anyone who saw her at Paper Mill knows she's the real deal as FB.

What about Lisa Jolley? She was only in Hairspray a short time, but she's always awesome in Don't Quit Your Night Job -- she might be too old though, and not many people know who she is, but they should!
I thought I remembered Kritzer saying in an interview a few years ago that her FUNNY GIRL at Papermill was filmed for the Lincoln Center archives.
Does anyone know if this is the case?

I really think Shoshana should be given a shot at the role. As much as Kritzer is a super talented Broadway star, Bean has always had the capacity to be a living legend, in my opinion. It requires that stature to even attempt to step in to Babs shoes. Kritzer and Block are stars in their own right, but Bean has the capability of being a major pop cultural force. Just ask shirley Maclaine .
Jumping in with my two cents because I'm bored...
Sutton is just too physically wrong for the part. Also, I don't think she's the best fit vocally either. Actually, I think the majority of people in the Actors Fund concert way over-sang it. Leslie Kritzer I don't know about... she's good and was funny in Legally Blonde, but I'm not sure if she actually comes across as having enough "star quality" (and I hate that expression) to carry a show. I think Shoshana Bean would end up completely changing the score and riffing on every single note. Stephanie Block seems like the best choice at the moment, even though physically she still seems a little off. Whoever said Kristin Chenoweth was probably joking, but in certain ways I think she'd be great. She'd probably get the humor and certain aspects of Fanny better than anyone. She was a riot in "Stairway to Paradise" doing some of Fanny Brice's old stuff. However, there are other problems with Kristin...
Maybe they should just cast everyone, and have them alternate like with the kids in Billy Elliot.
Chenoweth is not really that good of an option for this role. Apart from the fact that she couldn't be more un-Jewish if she wanted to, she couldn't sing the role 8 times a week. Chenoweth has a wonderful voice but her Broadway belt isn't strong enough to sing "I'm the Greatest Star," "Cornet Man," or "Don't Rain on My Parade" 8 times a week. Of course her comedic timing is so wonderful that it'd be great to get a studio cast recording or see her do the role once. That's what so wonderful about the Actor's Fund Benefit concert, we got people like LaChanze, Jane Krakowski, Chenoweth, and Foster who wouldn't be cast in an actual production.
Kritzer has star power to spare. She got raves doing the LuPone concert, and was one of the actors everyone raved about after seeing LEGALLY BLONDE (and her part is basically an ensemble track with a few lines thrown in).
