How Does She Do It?

Now, I am NOT here to start an Eden Espinosa bashfest, but I am here to ask all of you voice teachers/those studying voice: how does Eden Espinosa hit those notes? I'm a guy and have trouble hitting and sustaining the G sharps and A's as long as she does (I can hardly hit an A to begin with). One can hear that she goes into a different place in her voice when she hits those notes (whether you want to call it screechiness or not, I'm really not interested), but where does she place it? How does she do it?

re: How Does She Do It?

Lots of physical work. Look into Joan Leder's voice work- I study with one of Joan's protegee's, and the work is heavily alignment-based. It deals with body alignment, muscle relaxation, and also freeing the jaw hinge and placing the sound on the soft palate.

(PS- Joan is the voice teacher of Idina, Patti LuPone, Betty Buckley, Bernadette, etc. etc. It's impossible to schedule a lesson with her unless you're pretty much already a star.)

Joan *Lader*

I had a chance to work with her this past summer, and Joan helped me alot in just a few sessions..She really did teach me about relaxing my muscles...not just only those that directly affect my voice, but my entire body.

She is very popular in New York, and it IS possible to schedule appointments, but make sure you schedule months in advance.
awkward.

Not only is it how does she do it physically, but how in God's name is she keeping it up night after night? It really is incredible.

re: How Does She Do It?

I thought I read an article with her where she claimed she didn't have much vocal training...which makes me REALLY nervous for her.

I'm sure she lives like a monk- no talking, lots of sleep, etc.

So true, Robbie. Now the question is how long she'll have that voice for.

re: How Does She Do It?

She has an insanely good mix.
Very strong.
That is not chest, so it's not too vocally taxing (most of the time, at least).
The sound is very much in her head, and that's what makes her belt so light and easy, but still powerful.

I think her voice will stay like that so long as she doesn't get lazy and use her throat.
Eep!

And falsetto exercises help in obtaining those higher notes (for guys).
And practicing those warmups - they're not just for warming up.

Personally, I think I have too much bloom.
