The point of the song is to establish Radames' point of view before he meets Aida. He has to be the "Proud Captain" for us to buy into his character arc. I don't think it works to have him bemoaning his country's war.
In the original, he also rationalizes what others might perceive as imperialism, with the lyric: "The more we find, The more we see, The more we come to learn. The more that we explore, The more we shall return". If he acknowledges the inherent cruelty involved in his conquests, he has nothing to learn from his relationship with Aida, and therefore he has nowhere to go.
