"The critics hated MERMAID. It won't get nominations because the critics hated it. Sherie won't get a nomination because she gave an uneven, overblown performance and because the critics hated her and the show. "
Really? Because SRS was the only thing Ben Brantley liked about that show.
... but she won't really be nominated, will she?
ok good, i didn't think i was crazy.
MelissaF,
I prefered Heather Ayers as Elisabeth. I thought she was great as well!
well it could get a best musical nomination over xanadu but i highly doubt it will. I think Fitzgerald should be nominated for featured actor as his peformance is great. Though the feautred actress race is very tight I think martin deserves a nomination and Sutton could potentially get one. Megan has her name over the maquee i do believe meaning she would have to be petitioned to have her featured and so i dont see her getting nominated. I think foster could get the "rised above the material" nomination because shes been nominated for everything since Millie.
Just to clarify (I think Wanna Be A Foster was the one who mentioned it), South Pacific is NOT eligible for Best Orchestrations since it is using the originals. I'd assume Jonathan Tunick will be nominated in that category for Catered Affair since he gets nominated for just about everything he does.
As for Young Frankenstein, I see it being nominated for Best Featured Actor (Christopher Fitzgerald) and Best Featured Actress (Andrea Martin). Those two have been by far the best received parts of the show. I could see it possibly being nominated for Set or Lighting Design, but I wouldn't count on it.
Well, I don't know about Best Musical, but set design is a lock.
Mel, this is why you should have ended with THE PRODUCERS. Not competitive season, awful show, wins 12 Tonys.
they've got to have something for the set / lighting, the technological aspects of that show were quite phenomenal.

"I bet its nominated for:
Best Musical
Best Leading Actor (Roger Bart)
Best Featured Actress (Andrea Martin)
Best Featured Actor (Christopher Fitzgerald)
Best Book of a Musical
Best Scenic Design
Best Lighting
Best Choreography "
Those are the noms that I know of. I don't think that Megan Mullally will get one.
I think that these would probably have the best chance at winning.
Best Leading Actor (Roger Bart)
Best Featured Actress (Andrea Martin)
Best Featured Actor (Christopher Fitzgerald)
Best Lighting
Isn't there a fair chance that Megan Mullally will get nominated because she's Megan Mullally?
good point Insertclevernamehere
I personally think she did a good job playing Elizabeth but Andrea Martin deserves the tony more.
I haven't seen a lot of the new shows this season, so I can't really compare shows. I did see YF and do think there will be a nomination for set design. I also enjoyed Christopher Fitzgerald's performance and think he will definitely be nominated.

"I think Sherie Rene Scott's performance in LITTLE MERMAID is going to go down as the worst performance by a theatre veteran on Broadway this season. She is just awful.
This season is just too filled with breathtaking performances by Featured Actresses in musicals to throw away a nomination on her throwaway performance in MERMAID."

I completely agree, Foster. Ms. Scott is an incredible vocalist, but her performance in The Little Mermaid, IMO, was absurd, shameful, and really down right hard to watch at times.

"Really? Because SRS was the only thing Ben Brantley liked about that show."

No, Brantley actually made it a point to mention that she inappropriately uses about 600 different dialects as Ursula (and poorly executed ones at that). When I read it in his review I was relieved because it was one of the aspects of her performance that drove me up the wall.
In response to the topic of the thread (sorry), I could see Young Frankenstein getting a nomination or two (probably being Set Design and MAYBE a featured actress spot for Ms. Martin), but, like many others here, I just have a feeling that the Tony folks are going to shut this one out completely.

"Isn't there a fair chance that Megan Mullally will get nominated because she's Megan Mullally?"
If they won't nominate Julia Roberts for being Julia Roberts or Denzel Washington for being Denzel Washington, I highly doubt they'd nominate Megan Mullally for being Megan Mullally.

It might get quite a bunch, and Chris Fitzgerald is a good bet for a win.
I never understood all the despising hatred toward YF here on the board as I enjoyed it a lot. I never expected it to be the next Producers so if it doesn't hit that why think it's the worst around when it clearly isn't...

Franklin I agree....Reading the threads here I was starting to second guess purchasing the tickets....I enjoyed the show, had some laughs, and loved Andrea and Christopher's performances...i just chalk these posts to opinions, and make the decision for myself
So how are the Best Musical noms lining up then: A Catered Affair, In the Heights, Passing Strange(?)- surely there will be at least one old-style musical comedy in the mix?
IN THE HEIGHTS
PASSING STRANGE
A CATERED AFFAIR
XANADU
GLORY DAYS
And there are only four slots. So one of those will have to go. There's no way TWO of those are not going to get nominated so YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN can be thrown into the mix.
WBaF, critics definitely did NOT hate SRS. They thought the show was only ok, and SRS was the best part about the show. Where did you get that they hated her performance?
Because SRS was the only thing Ben Brantley liked about that show.
"The unfortunate Ms. Scott, a brassy young Broadway veteran (“Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” “Aida”), has eight octopuslike tentacles to contend with, which may account for the bizarre mutability of her accent, which shifts among Cockney, plummy English, Brooklynese and Zsa Zsa Gabor Hungarian."
-Ben Brantley, The New York Times
Megan has her name over the maquee i do believe meaning she would have to be petitioned to have her featured and so i dont see her getting nominated.
The only person whose name is above the title for YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is MEL BROOKS. All of the actors are BELOW THE TITLE. The only actor petitioned for Leading was Roger Bart, and the Administration Committee approved it.
Roger Bart is giving the least impressionable performance of his career in YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN.
Best Leading Actor in a Musical will be between Lin-Manuel Miranda, Daniel Evans, Tom Wopat, Paulo Szot, and Cheyenne Jackson.
There's no way Bart would get a nomination over these men.
I really don't understand why so many people hate Young Frankenstein? Is it because it's cool to hate it because the critics did? I feel like the critics just wanted to pan Mel Brooks no matter what he did because of his giant ego.
Young Frankenstein is not as bad as people say it is. It is most certainly not anywhere near the worst show of the season. That being said, it wont go down in history as one of the best musicals to ever hit the great white way, but I found it very fun and entertaining with excellent scenery, special effects, costumes and a killer cast!

They hate it because they think the show sucks. Why can't you understand that?
Why can't anyone understand that? It didn't get good reviews because it was not an enjoyable experience.
Why do people assume you have an agenda or are just going along with the critics if they don't like something?
I didn't like YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN because I didn't like it.
I think the Little Mermaid should get nominated for at least something. I think In the Heights will win best musical, no matter who is nominated.

Here I Am, I am not a hater. I have no agenda. I am the stupid tourist that likes everything. I saw 7 shows when I was in town last week (In the Heights, Gypsy, Young Frankenstein, Sunday in the Park, Cry-Baby, South Pacific, Spring Awakening), and Young Frankenstein was the worst of them all. It was as if Mel Brooks and company said "Let's throw some crap together and people will come because of The Producers and of instant name recognition." The talents of stellar cast were completely wasted. I actually felt sorry for them.
NEWS FLASH:
