Hi. I was wondering if critics are giving Mario Lopez x number of perfs till they critique him? Would anyone care to elaborate? Thanks, RC in Austin, Texas
I believe May 11 is his official opening night. I could be wrong.
I've never heard of replacements having "an opening night" that wasn't their first performance. They had an after-party on Tuesday...his premiere performance.
How often does the press bother with reviews just because of a replacement anyway? I know once in a while a critic will "re-visit" a show, but they'd go nuts if they tried to catch each replacement: even if only for the leading characters.
Correct me if I'm wrong: and I know you will!
Unless critics are offered comps to come back and review, they're not coming back.
CHICAGO did it once, with Melanie Griffith.
COLOR PURPLE did it with Fantasia.
But it's really at the producers' discretion if they want to invite critics back.
The critics only review replacements when a Major Star takes over a Major Role - Mario Lopez as Zach isn't either.
I think it was about three weeks before the reviews for Clay Aiken in Spamalot showed up. I think it will depend, as well, on how well he does, if he's not good I doubt the producers will ask them back (not saying he isn't good, haven't read anything about his performance yet).
