I just one this on ebay (finally!). Been wanting to hear this score for years, but only have seen the number from one of the TOny DVD's (Step to the Rear). Any fans of this show? Favorite numbers?

A mildly enjoyable show where Anthony Roberts got his big break

We had this in the round theatre in Ft Worth called Casa Manana that did musicals every summer, and some of the picks were great, from an oddity point of view... like Mr. President and The Chocolate Soldier and How Now Dow Jones. Personally, I love the show, although it's dated as hell. It'll never be revived, for obvious reasons, but it's still a fun piece of work. The opening number for Act Two is a howl, and I still get a small giggle out of the line, "The Dow jumped six hundred points to hit 3,000!".

I direct you to Ken Mandelbaum's brilliant book on the theatre, Not Since Carrie: 40 Years of Broadway Flops, to understand the reason that this show was not a long-running success.

If you haven't read it, you should. It's required reading for anyone in the theatre.

There is a terrific comedy song in it called "Shakespeare Lied"

"The tears that overtake ya,
And ache ya
in the trachea,
Don't kill ya till they make ya old and gray..."

I've performed it in revues and it always goes over well.

The show was probably not really worth watching, but the score is very listenable, very 60ies Broadway. And btw it wasn't a huge flop, just a little one, even got nominated for a number of Tonys that season.

Gawk, Tousle and Shucks (though I think it has another name as well) is a spectacular song!
