Tea with Honey.
Stay away from lemons before singing.
Also stay away from cold water and chocolate before singing.

Stay away from milk and dairy!
Hot liquids, such as water and tea!
Don't talk or whisper! Whispering is actually worse for your voice than talking normally.
I've never heard of Singer's Saving Grace, but try it! LOL... I've got to get me some of that stuff...

I'm not an actor, I'm a television news anchor, but I found out the hard way one time... no soda!
My voice coach told me hot tea. You can use lemon, just not right before the show. It also helped me to suck on a lozenge. I guess the advantage I have is I can hide my tea under the desk
Good luck!

Posted: 2/8/05 at 4:58pmI suggest Ginger Tea (Lipton makes a nice one). That's especially good if you have a sore throat.

Posted: 2/12/05 at 8:55amTry dissolving about 3 tablespoons of honey in a mug of hot water. It's great. Very soothing if you've been over-singing, or have a cough or something, and great for just before you sing.

Posted: 2/12/05 at 9:01amtea with lemons is most definately not a good idea. The acids in the lemon with burn the enamel off your teeth.

Don't use anything with menthol in it the day you sing.
It numbs your throat and while your throat may FEEL better, it will hinder your vocal production!

Posted: 2/12/05 at 12:36pmWell I once gargled 8 oz. of water, a teaspoon of salt, a teaspoon of vinegar and a dash of olive oil and it worked wonders. But I'm sure there are tons of mysterious theories like this..

Posted: 2/12/05 at 3:17pmHot, not scalding, water. People say water is the best thing but if it's cold it will strain. Just heat up water like its for tea. Tea helps too, but I think water's better.

I have a very demanding vocal schedule, so the way I keep the illnesses, not to mention the bad singing at bay, is 3 liters of water everyday. Keep in mind, I have a very small frame (5'1.5"), so if you are taller than me, consider maybe more. Check with your doctor to get a good amount, but you do not want to be drinking so much that you're drowning yourself from the inside.
There are these great longezs called "Slippery Elms" which are AMAZING. They have a weird feeling, but if you stick one in a half hour before a show, they are sure to improve your vocal tone considerably.
