Do you believe recording classic Broadway showtunes in a more contemporary style is good or bad for Broadway? What about Jay-Z's "Hard Knock Life" rendition?
It's alright... I wouldn't buy the cd or anything.
ALot of people who listen to it don't even know it's from broadway.
jera
I don't like Jay-Z's "Hard Knock Life."
And Gwen Stefani's "Rich Girl" is a remake of a song that was released in the nineties. I still like it though. Not all songs work being recorded like that but it has a nice beat and I'm sure Bock and Harnick got money for it, and had to approve it. So, everyone wins.
I don't know, the whole samplng of Broadway tunes leaves me a little cold, and a little peeved.

i hated it at first and now i love it like there's no other... so much fun.
GWen sold out and stomed on our punk rock hearts.
Gwen I used to love you but DANCE MUSIC? I know the last 2 No Doubt Albums pushed my paitience. But U had so much cred after the first album, the duet with Bradley on Saw Red and the first hit album. Where did you go Gwen?
I don't like Gwen anymore.
I hate it and Jay Z's "Hard Knock Life."
I have no problem with it as long as it sounds good
I do like Hard Knock life though cause Jay-Z has the sick flow.
And I like the fact thats she's trying to do different kinds of music. That's why I couldn't be a professional singer, because I like too many types of music and everyone gets upset when people try different things
I'm all for trying new things or changing your sound. But there is changing your sound for invention sake and changing it to seel records.
Two case in points
Black Eyed Peas pre fergie were more rhyme based and less party/commercial/horrible. They changed to sell records.
Beck-Changes sound every album to reflect his life at that point. He is also a consumate artist who believes in experimentaion(Midnight Vultures).
I'm afraid Gwen falls into the first example. Just remember No Doubt was a band first and foremost. It became the Gwen show after awhile, for obvious reasons. But now say NO DOUBT and people automatically think, oh thats the band that Gwen is in, or the band that backs Gwen up. And it's not fair to the other guys in the band. BOO x7 Gwen.
How is that her fault, though? She's even said that she didn't like how the media turned No Doubt into GWEN STEFANI and No Doubt

I don't like notions of genre "purity." As long as it sounds good and/or it expresses what you're trying to say, who cares if you mix different kinds of music? It's like yelling at the Beatles for putting a sitar in their records.
And I like Love.Angel.Music.Baby. It's not a perfect album, but it's good workout music. :)
HAHAHAH. Plum, you work out to it too? I thought I was the only one.
My thoughts exactly, Plum
Double Post
Oh my god...I had no idea that Rich Girl wasn't an original song.....>____>
hehe ^____^;
Plum, The Beatles are a totally different beast. The experimentation with the sitar, tape loops, distortion were all in the vein of growing as a band. Doing it because they were influenced to do so, not push records. I mean you never heard a Paul/Bowie colabo on an album. Or a John and Mick one. The closest the beatles came to guest spots was Clapton on While My Guitar.... and even then they didn't even advertise he was on the album.
I guess my problem isn't that she wants to try new things. But there is just this whole air of money on her solo album. And yes I realize it was the media who pushed her out front. They did the same to Janis when she was in Big Brother and it happened to Grace Slick during Jefferson Airplane. It happens anytime a girl is in a band, look at Garbage. But while Gwen speaks out against it. It looks to me that over the years she grew more comfertable and fully accepted the role and turned her back on her true and original fans to pander to the MTV crowd.
I hate it. Alot of people I know are idiotic enough to believe that it's an original song. And plus, it just really annoys me.

No offense to anyone, but I also tend to be suspicious of accusations of "selling out." Seems to me that most of the time "selling out" consists of becoming popular. And heaven forbid an artist should change their style. That must mean they're "abandoning" their fans. We have no idea what's going on in an artist's head, but everybody feels completely free to determine when a change is "selling out" and when it's "artistic growth." Seems to me the difference is predicated more on people's pre-existing likes and dislikes than anything else.
I abhor MTV, by the way, with every fiber of my being, and I always have. And admittedly, because I haven't listened to the radio in about 3 years, I'm not up on what the current teeny-bopper sounds are. But like I said, I do like most of Love.Angel.Music.Baby, and in the end, what counts in an album is how it sounds.
Thanks for being the voice of reason in this thread, Plum.
I had to listen to it played over and over again, while my classmates learned to sign it for the talent show (which never happened)...I hate it. I liked the original...hate the new one.

it has bad grammar. It should be "If I were a rich girl" not "If I was a rich girl".
oh get a freakin life! people can do what they want.
