Ummm... Tonya- what are you talking about? No one said they couldn't do anyting. They were just voicing their opinions on the song. If you have a problem with that then... And in the spirit of POTO, "get a life? madame. Perhaps it is you who should get a life."
HATE IT!
No one knows where that it is Broadway.
Jay-Z's HArd Knock Life - I like. HArd Knock Life and If I Were a Rich Man have two very different meanings...

None of my friends knew it was based off broadway. I had to explain it them, and then they just looked at me like I was crazy. Yeah, story of my life.
Hard Knock Life on the other hand pretty much everyone recognizes. When I first heard it on the radio I was like...they're playing Annie on the radio? but then I heard more and realized it was a remake-whatever thing.
I don't know if I really like either...it's definetely interesting, but weird too.
I hate the song- one of the hip hop classes at my dance studio is dancing to it this year, and unfortunately that class goes on during my tap class. So I get to spend and hour listening to it in the room next door every week.
What bugs me the most is when people don't believe you when you tell them that it is taken from a Broadway song.

Gwen is fabulous! I love her- miss her old punk sensability- but times change and so must you to stay on top. I think her new album is hot.
I don't like it because it's hypocritical!!!!!!
I like the reggae version better that came way before Gwen Stefani did it.
I am guessing that version came after the Fiddler thing, or maybe it didn't. All I know is that the reggae version is much much better.
I love Hollaback Girl though.

I think the song is lame, but I'm not necessarily mad that she sampled a broadway song. I think songs like that as well as "Hard Knock Life" are interesting because they are expanding their own horizons and trying something different.
I'm all for artist crossovers. As long as they're good, I think having fresh interpretations of classics are, in general, good for keeping the originals around
Whitney Houston did a song from Chess on one of her earlier albums and even the Beatles covered "Till There Was You" from The Music Man

I personally was not a fan of Hard Knock Life. Maybe it was because my brother played it all the time and rap just isn't my cup of tea.. On the other hand, I like If I Was Rich Girl-except for the little rap torward the end. Who is that by? Da Brat? I hate it...everything else is pretty good though. I love No Doubt-their Greatest Hits CD is one of my favorite CDs in my collection.
But what if a singer takes a song out of context, and puts a new story to it? Was it OK Jay-Z did this for "Hard Knock Life"?
God forbid a pop star brings a Broadway song to the masses, who clearly don't deserve to be as cultured as the open-minded population of BWW.
No it wasn't right for Jay-Z and I hate this song from Gwen Stefani... I think it's fake that everyone assumes that it is her own song and I think it's stupid that she is so "original", but can't create her own song. Well, it's cheap and a stupid remake anyway

Well, it's not Gwen's problem that people assume its her own song. The Fiddler writers get credit for it, if people cared to look. I'm not a fan of the song itself, but I like the beat and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Gwen and L.A.M.B. Even if this song isn't an original, Gwen's style and flair is one-of-a-kind.
Well, let's see now...If I Were a Rich Man is about a man talking to G-d - through his religion, trying to survive. Though it is comical, it is touching because it is basically what we Jews do when we pray - talk to G-d. Nothing is more personal to that. for Gwen to take it and make it this materialistic BS - that's just wrong. It lost its meaning.
As I said, Jaz-Z's Hard Knock Life is different because it does not have that same meaning to it. I don't know, it is too hard to explain.
kangaroo, Stefani has written 99% of her own solo as well as No Doubt's songs. She certainly can write, and has proven so time and again with a great number of original, unique, popular hits.

the same can be said for any covers, or other songs that are sampled in a song...no one ever really has a problem with that!
Thenardier - If I Were A Rich Man is not a religious hymn - it is a showtune! Perspective!!
I did NOT say hymn.
(I did not mean for this to sound rude, Rath. For that I apologize, if you took it that way. I have and had no reason to insult you.)
I never said you did. I was responding to what you posted, which implied that it had the same meaning/value as one.
Well, it does...in a way. Showtune or not...it is one of the more popular Jewish songs. Nto to mention, the actual music is, in fact, Jewish...
Apparently it didn't bother the composers who gave her permission to use it.
I have never understood why people on this board are so upset about the fact that the "general population" doesn't know/understand Broadway, yet when a piece of it is brought to "the masses" in a different setting, it engenders outrage. Do you want other people to learn about Broadway or not? Do you just want to keep it to yourselves?
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Well, the song sucks nonetheless...and I am still sticking with my opinions...
No one's stopping you from having your opinions, but your tone to Rath was unnecessarily rude and condescending, whether or not you meant it to be.
Actualy, no Rath. My English prof (who doesn't no Bway and is not Jewish) was the first to bring up the fact that she thought it was disrespectful.
And Tiff, you stay in your corner...
