I totally agree. I can think of a number of shows that fit the latter category - some past and some present - but will refrain from naming them so that the villagers do not get the pitchforks and torches ready to attack. .

I may just go to see it for the simple reason that the Lyric is the only current Broadway house I have not yet seen a show in!

Broadway has been host to every form of entertainment throughout its entire history.  There is no reason this show shouldn't play in a Broadway house.  It's a Broadway show as much as anything that has played in a Broadway theatre for over 100 years.

@PThespian " Is there another requirement that must be met in order to be a Broadway show?" Yes there is. It must be deemed a "legitimate theatrical production." That said. I don't think this show is anywhere near the line, and I think what people are saying is that it is qualitatively beneath the minimum standard, but as we all know that is neither relevant nor exclusive to Paramour. On that theory we would have to include probably 10% of all shows Broadway gets.

@After Eight This is one of your more revelatory posts, suggesting as it does that you want theatre to be unchallenging and homogenized. That puts everything else in perspective. Most of us have higher aspirations for what theatre is, and higher expectations too.

@Uncle Charlie, I didn't think you were trying to bash me. I just thought you were reacting negatively to having your lame putative humor called out. The only mistake you really made was in assuming you were the intended audience for my comment; you weren't: I don't care if you care or not.

It is, of course, a Broadway show by definition. I understand the feeling that it is something else. It felt to me like a Six Flags summertime amphitheatre five-times-a-day entertainment where the THEME is Broadway. Like, it doesn't have characters, but it has the IDEA of characters. It doesn't really have story, but it has the IDEA of story. God, what an awful show.

Also, this is the thread where After Eight straight up says they hate theater that isn't utterly and intentionally devoid of thought or meaning.

@Pthespian "Can you define "legitimate theatrical experience" for me?"

It's not defined (and the last word is "production" not "experience" though I don't think that matters) but left in the discretion of the Admin Committee. What I can do is tell you some things that have, for a variety of reasons, not been eligible, such as rock concerts, films and upfronts and similar industrial events. But by the same means, I can tell you that there is no way Paramour would not be deemed a legit theatrical production.

Meanwhile, why is no one discussing that Trip of Love is still running. That is the biggest mystery of all!

PThespian said: "There's an Administration Commitee for Broadway? That I didn't know.

I know there are different committees that determine whether or not certain shows are eligible, in their opinion, to be in contention for that specific award. I didn't realize that their opinions are what make a show a Broadway show or not. Can they say a show playing on Broadway is not a Broadway show?

Is there another committee that does that? Legit question.
"

"Broadway theatre" is a legal construct controlled by the League. Each Broadway theatre is entitled to that appellation only because the League admits it, and a prerequisite to being a Broadway show is that it be registered with the League and that requires that it be qualified for registration. The League in turn controls the Tony Admin Committee, that has the power to say yay or nay to a show being a legitimate theatrical production. If you want to test this, the way to do it is to put up a show and call it a Broadway show when it is either not in a Broadway house or not registered. You will be sued. There are numerous examples of this in practice but perhaps the most evident today is anything at the theatre at MSG but there are many others-a show at City Center, Town Hall, etc etc. Likewise, you can do an opera in a Broadway house and it is a Broadway show but if you do it at Lincoln Center (except at the Beaumont) it is not.

PThespian said: "So every Broadway show had to be registered with the League before it opens, and they determine if it is or is not a Broadway show?

So Phantom registered 28 years ago before it began its run and that's why they can now say it is the longest running show in Broadway history?

School of Rock registered before making the announcement that the film was being turned into a Broadway musical?
"

I don't know exactly when these procedures started. I assume it goes back before Phantom but I was not around here then and I have never paid attention to the timeline. I do know the League started in the 30s, around the time of the passage of the Wagner Act, so I feel pretty safe in saying that Show Boat was not registered. But otherwise yes a show registers at some point before it opens and normally around the time it secures a theatre. Shows obviously call themselves Broadway bound all the time, and as we know most of those shows never make it. I have no idea when SOR registered but it was not likely that it was when they announced it unless they had a theatre simultaneously. (Otherwise, it would just be "Broadway bound" although -as is sometimes the case- the people involved make it much more likely than if, say, you and I announce we are producing a Broadway show.) For most shows, there is nothing to "decide" about the registration because it is obvious that 99+% are qualified (and yes that includes Paramour). Finally, I'll just mention that legitimate also has meaning aside from in the Broadway context, both in the Variety expression "legit" which originally was distinguished from burlesque or vaudeville, and in England where until the late 1800s meant "serious" theatre such that even comedies and melodramas were "illegitimate."

This is consistently the reason I think about seeing Chicago again for the 5th time. I saw it at the Rodgers and Shubert but never the Ambassador which remains the only house I haven't seen anything in. I keep thinking, "It has to close eventually," but...maybe it actually doesn't.

But back to the show at hand, I've really only heard negative things about it from folks who have seen it. And while I'm happy to go see something bad if it's bad in interesting ways, is the general thought that Paramour is more dreary and boring than interestingly bad? I'm also happy to hear from people who love it if they exist! It also wouldn't be the first time people hated something that I ended up being fond of (hey, Leap of Faith).

In time it will run out of steam, it's obvious that tourists are keeping this going, but once it starts to show it cannot make any money, it will simply decamp and move to Vegas, the Venetian hasn't got a big show and other hotel franchises would snap it up.

Thought the Lyric would be the ideal Broadway house for Frozen, rather than the St James, onviously I expect Frozen to sell out, so would of assumed that Disney would have been all over the lyric, those 300 - 400 extra seats mean $$$$$.

I think it's pretty clear Disney has passed on the venue multiple times, presumably because it doesn't like it. My guess is that they don't like the pricing dynamics of those extra seats, although perhaps there are other things about the theatre they don't like as well. The one thing we know about Disney is that they are all about formula.

Well I am not "aware" either but the theatre has been vacant for long stretches, and has been sold several times, with nary a peep out of Disney even though they are undoubtedly not unaware of the albatross that sits opposite their crown jewel. So it does seem pretty clear to me they have no interest in it.

Translated as: you actually have no clue and would rather try to pass off assumptions and conjecture as facts to boost your own ego and make others believe you know more than you actually do. Sorry for the lengthy translation but....

This could be just they didn't have a show to go in there at the time.

Also Disney have been pretty loyal to the  Nederlander group, up until this year.

@Phantom of London, yes it could be. I see it differently but that's fine.

@Headband, your comment is off base. I clearly stated that my comment was a "guess," which by definition means it was not based on facts. To suggest anything related to my ego or trying to get folks to believe I know more than I do is ridiculous in light of what I said. You need a better translator, or perhaps you should just cease throwing stones until you get out of your own glass house.

I would guess through the year and close in March or April. And maybe SpongeBob? They need a big theatre for such a huge production.

ATG has a deal with Cirque for the next decade for the Lyric. Not necessarily for Paramore

They're giving out free tickets to Paramour in hopes of generating buzz. I nabbed two seats for next Thursday.

I'm assuming this means it's not doing so well.
