The new Wicked movie thread made me think.. there are ALOT of speculations for many different movie musicals of stuff currently on broadway or recently closed. The few that comes to mind,

Wicked
In the Heights
Spring Awakening
Rock of Ages

Am I missing any? [slash why is there this huge flow of them happening now?]

Whatever happened to that moviemusicals.net website that helped everyone track upcoming movie musicals? [ re: How many adaptation Movie Musicals are in the works now? ]

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. Is 4 really a huge flow? They'll be spread out over quite a few years likely. It doesn't seem any different than normal (one every year or so?) or at least the pace we've seen lately.

There is talk of turning Billy Elliot back into a movie.

I know you asked about recent musicals, but I know Carousel, Damn Yankees, and My Fair Lady remakes in the works.

I think 9 to 5 would be a great moviemusivie. Frances McDormand, Anne Hathaway, Kristin Chenoweth, Alec Baldwin and Kathy Bates.

FAME and NINE come out this year.

Shaiman and Whittmen are writing an original movie musical based off of a TBA Mattel toy. They are also working on HAIRSPRAY 2.

BAT BOY has been under development for YEARS. Jake Gyllenhaal has been attached.

SUNSET BOULEVARD starring Glenn Close has been in talks but Andrew Lloyd Weber is notorious for his poor organization and lack of commitment to projects, which has affected investors for that project. Basically, that will be made whenever he DECIDES to finally commit.

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 4 will air on the Disney Channel either this year or next.

BOB - THE MUSICAL, about a man who wakes up one day to find that his life has turned into a musical, with everyone constantly breaking into song, was supposed to be a feature film starring Will Ferrell. However, I believe they have decided to just make it a stage musical.

A TV musical version of PETER PAN had been planned for last December, but if Meron/Zadan keep that project going, it should come out next December.

Didi Cohn wants to write/produce GREASE 3.

Several directors are fighting to helm JERSEY BOYS.

Mendes wanted to do GYPSY. So did Marshall. Who knows what's up with that property...the recent revival affected those plans.

Stroman had once planned to translate CONTACT.

Mackintosh is waiting for the appropriate time to do LES MISERABLES.

those are just from memory...there are DOZENS of projects in various stages of development. It's very hard to get them green-lit. They cost $$$$$. But the genre is creeping back into main interest. "THE MUSICAL IS BACK!"

"SUNSET BOULEVARD starring Glenn Close has been in talks but Andrew Lloyd Weber is notorious for his poor organization and lack of commitment to projects, which has affected investors for that project. Basically, that will be made whenever he DECIDES to finally commit. "

It may also star ELAINE PAIGE, Barbara Streisand, Liza Minelli or Petula Clark, as all are in the running with Close (the Tony Award Winner). That's been in the works since 2005, but as CapnHook so kindly put, Lloyd Webber has yet to find an appriopriate time. Also though, it should be noted that Lloyd Webber himself and his RUG put up more than the majority of the backing financially!

"Mackintosh is waiting for the appropriate time to do LES MISERABLES. "
He's been saying that since 1987 as soon as it hit Broadway, and then they announced 1992, and that didn't happen (read anything in a book/"Stage by Stage Les Miserables" documentary from before '92 and he mentions that year ALL the time!); I don't think it will - it'd be a mess to see them try to do "One Day More" as it is on screen unforutnately, or I can't think of any clever way of doing it.

Also in the works: Jekyll & HYDE - The Musical, which has been picked up by The Hatchery, I believe last year. Apparently the famous director del Torro (I honestly cannot remember his name - he did Pan's Labrynth, amongst other things) had extreme interest in directing a new J&H movie and they approached him to do the musical - but he didn't want to. And since that Keanu Reaves movie is happening or "happening" as of now, it looks like there might never be a J&H Musical movie!

Aside from Paige, the difference is Close is the only one who WANTS to do it and is gunning for it. She's ready. She's just (im)patiently waiting on ALW. And yes, he will put up most/all the dough. He'll have to.

There again was renewed interest in a LES MIS movie in 2005 and again in 2007 (picking up on the interest from 2007). They're throwing it out in the trades to gain attention and interest, waiting for the A-lists to approach. Frankly, for this particular project, I think that is very reverse thinking. Once the film gets the 'go' I am POSITIVE there will be several knocks at the door begging to be involved. Personally, I would have to have Spielberg direct this one. If he HAS to do a musical, it needs to either be this or SAIGON.

What are you talking about? Paramount Pictures are the ones who don't want "Sunset Boulevard" to happen. Andrew Lloyd Webber has said himself that he would very much like to do it. I don't know where you've heard otherwise.

I've been saying Speilburg would be a great match for "Miss Saigon" for years.

Will Rapunzel be Disney's last musical film? I hope not. The movie looks like it's going to be great, same goes for The Princess and the Frog.

re: How many adaptation Movie Musicals are in the works now?

I would like Dreamworks animation to come up with another animated musical. I loved Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, The Road to El Dorado, and The Prince of Egypt.

I'm not sure if Rapunzel will be their last. I suppose it depends on how successful it wil be. Both Rapunzel and The Princess and the Frog sound promising though. Disney does well with animated musicals based on fairy tales, so they should probably stick to those.

I highly doubt Rapunzel will be Disney's final musical. Just like I doubt The Princess and the Frog will be their final animated feature, which seems to be what everyone is saying.

But a remake of Bye Bye Birdie is in the works? Who's supposed to be involved with that?

The BYE BYE BIRDIE remake was in talks in 2003 and was supposed to be directed by Jon Chu (I think I remember his name correctly...). It was going to be set modern-day with a hip-hop style. As if a Justin Timberlake-figure were drafted. But the studios pulled out and the project was indefinitely scrapped.

True, Paramount didn't want the SUNSET BLVD movie musical to be made....that is, under the terms that ALW had set. I don't know the specifics, but things just kept going downhill in their meetings and their last get-together proved fatal. Again the ego, lack of commitment, and poor organization of ALW doesn't bode well. The biggest issue was getting the rights to adapt the story. If I remember correctly, when ALW turned it into a stage musical, it was undefined as to what venue the musical would be written. It never specifically stated "stage only." (I *think* that's the story, it's been a while...)
