That's very interesting about MANDATED time off - is that for the protection of the regular performer? That is to say, is REQUIRING them to take time off with the idea that they must occasionally rest their voices?
I wonder of the actor being required to take time typically negotiates for full pay & no deduction from vacation allottments. Hmmmm.

When I was on tour (non-equity), understudies only went on if the principal was out/sick.
But when I did the Equity tour, the swings got to go on a cetain number of times.
I think it just varies from show to show, but it does happen.
