How will Assassins be received? — Page 2

Well, everybody's got the right to feel however they want about this show, but I love it. Mediocre Sondheim is better than anything Shwartz. The book is fantastically intriguing and you have to be heartless to not feel for these people. Who doesn't want to be noticed? They all had their reasons for doing what they did, but it's absolutely fascinating to see it the other way around. Instead of seeing them as murderers (or indeed, assassins) we get to see them as people. It's chilling. And I wouldn't really call this score mediocre at all. "Unworthy of Your Love" is one of the coolest duets ever and "Another National Anthem", and "Booth's Soliloquy" are just pure theatrical genius. But, as ushual I pretty much stand alone in this.

"Do I really want to see a musical about people who would things like this?"

But, they're still PEOPLE. That's what the musical is trying to say.

I like it. I don't need to prove it to myself or to you. It's one of my favorites and that's all that matters to me. Yes, justifiably, I was moved.

i am intrieged (sp?) by it, as i am by anything sodheim does.

My hope is that it'll be received very well. My gut tells me it won't because it'll still be considered controversial and some may even say it's in poor taste. However, I am psyched that it's coming to Broadway and am only bummed that my tickets aren't until June. I love the concept and Booth's song to open the show is one of my all-time favorite numbers.

Anyway, just a few thoughts from a newbie.

I found the book and score for Assassins to be far more engaging, entertaining, and stimulating than Follies or Bounce.

Umgeoboy, if you read my post clearly you would have understood that I did not "bash" the show as mounted by Roundabout. I expressed my dislike for the material in general and stated my choice not to spend my money on a ticket.

I know the show from its original run. I still don't care for it.

Yes, I know everything at the Roundabout is a limited run.

Jose, I went back and reread your original post. And your words were that limited run is producers saying that there is no audience...yet in your second post you say all of roundabout shows are limited run, therefore those two sentences do not go together at all. The show is a limited run because that is how roundabout does ALL of their productions. Yes, this show has a huge fan base which is why it has been extended before it even opened in previews to be exact!

I understand you are not a fan of the concept of the show and the bashing of the show before seeing it was a general statement, not directed at you. Many people on message boards, and in the press have bashed teh concept of the show before they have even seen it. I understand that it is a controversial issue and it does take a lot to get past the idea that the show glorifies assassins. But I would request (again not aimed at you Jose) that those who are bashing the show WITHOUT ever having seen it to stop. It is a show that deserves to be on broadway and definitely has a huge following behind it.
