I just rediscovered this song and (after listening to it a few times) have determined that it shows off my vocal and acting ranges VERY WELL.
I was just wondering what others think of this song and if ypu think it would be good for a college audition(ballad).
Thanks.
I think it would be fine, I adore the song.
Oh, how I love this song. Do it!
It would be a great choice. I only wish I was a guy!
this sounds familiar but im having a brain fart, whats this from?
oo right jk
No reason why a woman couldn't sing "I Don't Care Much". In fact, Streisand covered it on The Second Barbra Streisand Album.
If Barbra Streisand gets to be
Beyond indulgent
Why, oh why, not me?
Gotta love Forbidden Broadway.
I lose interest in her entire career after "What's Up, Doc?" and "The Way We Were," but her 60s recordings are sublime.
Ahhh I'm getting chill remembering this song as performed by Raul Esparza. And Adam Pascal for that matter. I miss Cabaret. :o(

what is happening at this point in the musical I always forget. He is getting taken to a concentration camp? Actually I do know that this song was originally to be sung by a yng male protistute in the show.

I was thinking about using it last year but the conclusion I came to was that it was just too repetitious and wasn't really all that difficult.
*sigh*
I can't believe tomorrow will be a year. I slept in one of my Cabaret t-shirts last night.

I think (but am not certain) that the song was written for Sally to sing in Cabaret but ultimately dropped.
In the 1987 production, Joel sang it practically as a throwaway.
It wasn't until the major revise in the 90s that it became a 'number'.
Treat it as a book song.

"I Don't Care Much" was in the '87 revival? Damn, I missed that one completely. I thought it was just "Don't Go" (I did a group project on Cabaret last semester, and it was my job to find out about the revivals as they compared to the original and film. It was a pain finding stuff about the '87 revival...luckily my professor didn't notice IDCM was omitted! :x).
I was under the impression that I DON'T CARE MUCH was written for Frau Kost. I remember hearing it was written for a 'prostitute', so I'm assuming it was for her.
I think it would be fine for a college audition if you paired it with a rangy, exciting uptempo.
It feels like a woman's song to me, which might be why the Emcee sang it in drag. And it makes perfect sense for Frau Kost. As for it being too simple, there's simple and simple. It might not be technically challenging or have a lot of notes, but getting it across emotionally is another matter. It reminds me of when a concert pianist acquaintance was explaining why a Mozart sonata that most students can play wasn't necessarily easy. He played the first couple of bars and said, "no, too heavy," played them again and said, "no, too lightweight." Simple and easy are not the same.
After going over all of my audition material I have come to the conclusion that I WILL NOT use IDCM.
Instead I will be singing Stars from Les Miz and The Kite from YAGMCB
I love "I Don't Care Much." In fact, it's one of my audition pieces. It may not be the "most" difficult, but when sung correctly and with passion (which is how I like to think I sing it) it can be very touching. So, I like using it.

You might want to rethink "Stars." It's used WAY too often. Also, Les Miz is frequently banned from college auditions. I Don't Care Much is simple, but it can razzle dazzle with dynamics (as long as it's done without an accent).
