Okay so I just watch Fantasia sing "I'm Here" on Oprah and........DAMN I cried...y'all Fantasia sung the mess out of that song...and I can actually say I have never had someone take me on a emotional ride through a song and she did it. SHE DID IT. She had me all the way wirh her.
I just want to say I have no worries about that woman playing Celie. I've had the pleasure of seeing her live in concert and she's damn good.
Fanstasia....You did it. Break a Leg !!!!

Posted: 3/2/07 at 9:00pmI'm sorry, her version cannot top LaChanze at all!

Posted: 3/2/07 at 9:05pmI'm not knocking LaChanze at all I've heard her's as well but Fantasia came from a different place she was singing in the subtext of the character..She identified with that song on a personal level and that what made it so good and you could see it.

I saw COLOR PURPLE live with the OBC, so yes I saw LaChanze.
While her performance and portrayal was amazing, I agree with unmasked, Fantasia seemed more connected. But since it wasn't in context of the show, I phrased it "rendition of the song."

Ah, just wondering what you had to compare it to.
I agree that Fantasia was goosebump inducing but has less of an impact out of context.

Posted: 3/2/07 at 9:16pmYou have to remember though that when you as and actor take over a role that someone originated you don't want to be a carbon copy of that person and when you sing a song you sometimes have to bring personal experiences into a song and it may not have anything to do with the show. Like Jennifer Hudson told that girl on "ONE NIGHT ONLY" when she was trying to sing "And I'm telling you" she told the girl "Millions of people have seen me sing the song, now you need to sing it your way."

I'm not knocking Fantasia at all, but there's a lot more to performing that song than crying at the end; I don't she emotes until the end of the song. When I first saw her sing the song on American Idol, I was unconvinced. After seeing her on Oprah, I'm confident that she can handle the score. Still, her performance doesn't come close to the depth that LaChanze had.

I saw LaChanze in the Color Purple and thought she was brilliant and deserved her Tony. But when it comes to singing I'm Here, she's no Fantasia.
If LaChanze could have delivered I'm Here as powerfully as Fantasia, she would have sung the song on Oprah during the show's preview, at the Tony's, at Broadway on Broadway, etc. If nothing else, Fantasia brought a new Broadway song to the homes of millions of Americans.

La Chanze had many roles and years of acting and singing on and Off Broadway.
Fantasia has what?
American Idol.
I just can't get past that wrong commercial.
I wish her luck,
butI think the press will eat her up and spit her out.

I think that was a wonderful rendition of the song.

Yeah, umm. I dunno. I'm not familiar with the show by any means, nor do I think I could do any better...
But I just don't know.
PS~ I know its been discussed to death, but damnit, when she says "SCHTILL" i want to die.

Posted: 3/3/07 at 1:01amHer voice is going to be killing her by the end of her first week. It's a tough score to sing anyways, but with her type of singing, it's gonna kill her voice. Get some honey and tea.

Elizabeth Withers-Mendez's only stage experience prior to the Color Purple was a high school play.
And for all of LaChanze's years on and off Broadway, she's simply not as talented a singer as Fantasia. We'll just have to wait and see if Fantasia can pull off the acting requirements of the role, particularly during the second act.

The score is not that difficult for Fantasia, and she won't have trouble singing it 8 times a week. If it was a problem, she would have signed up for 6 shows a week like other stars have done.
