This beautiful ballad from CURTAINS is sung by the Aaron, composter, lamenting the departure of his faithful lyricist and ex-wife, Georgia.
It takes on a much more poignant meaning once you realize that it was written by John Kander, alone.
Just a point of info, since the individual lyrics aren't written (yet) in the Playbill.

I never even thought of that.
Now, that is heart-breaking.
I can't wait for this cast recording!
I was so into the show that I didn't realize that either, until I read it someone speculating about it a couple of days later. I will hear it very differently this weekend when I see it for the second time.
aww, I had no idea. That is a great song too. And he sang it so well.
I would love to hear this song. I can't wait for the cast recording.
I believe this was mentioned in that article about Kander and Ebb that ran on the New York Times about the time that CURTAINS was playing in LA.
It is a beautiful ballad indeed (though I thought it was too short to be Danieley's only solo), Jason Danieley provides an incredibly powerful, touching, and ultimately haunting rendition of this number. One of the highlights of the show for me.
It was a highlight for me too. Gorgeous song, touching in both its place in the show and as a tribute to Fred Ebb. And beautifully performed by Danieley - not just his voice, but his whole interpretation of the song was so moving, nuanced and heartbreaking.

I saw the show several times in L.A. Each time Jason Danieley sang "I Miss the Music" there were tears in the audience.
I read an interview with Mr. Kander, who said when he wrote the song, he really wasn't thinking of Mr. Ebb. Recently I read that it had been re-written (lyrically), to be more of a tribute song. As for myself, I immediately thought of Mr. Ebb the first time I heard it. That hasn't changed. And although not true now since there are several KanderandEbb musicals in the wings; it saddens me think there will come a time in the future, when we will all "Miss the Music."

My favorite song in Curtains. Jason sings it so beautifully.

I "discovered" Jason in South Pacific on PBS, so was thrilled to get to see him live. His rich voice just pours forth in such a startling way, it was just thrilling to hear his voice reach every single corner of the theatre, and all so seemingly effortless. Can't wait for this track on the recording.
What are some of the lyrics?

The refrain goes "I miss the music, I miss my friend."
sounds like a gorgeous song...
Wow that makes the song all the more powerful. Thank you for pointing that out.

it was a lovely song, beautifully sung, IMO.
however, i thought it needed to be cut a bit when i first heard it. and for all i know it has been since i saw it.
good luck curtains! =)
Hmm, it's really interesting that no one brought this up. I'm skimming through all the Curtains threads (as I don't like to read anything about a show until i see it), but I saw this yesterday afternoon. The song started and you know, it was a song, sweet, but when Jason started talking about the process of writing a song, he began to play a vamp, which I immediately recognized as the Cabaret vamp. And then it completely hit me. Then I started noticing the use of the words partner and friend, not just her, and within seconds after the Cabaret vamp started playing I was in tears.
Was I just the only one who noticed this or was this added later, closer to the opening or something?

Kander wrote the song for Danieley after he signed on to do the show.
His rendition was such an overwhelming hit in previews that Kander wrote a reprise for in Act II.

The best song in the show, and Danielly sings it so well.
I wish he had more to sing in the show.

I miss the music
I miss the song.
Since she's not with me
It comes out wrong.
It doesn't matter
How hard I try
I've lost the music.
I don't know why.
When you're writing a song
And you've a partner
The room is filled with jokes and chatter.
She says something.
You say something.
She writes a line.
You play a vamp.
But when you're writing a song
Without a partner
That's a completely different matter
No one tells you,
"That's not funny."
No one says, "Let's cut that bar."
No one makes you better than you are.

A lovely ballad. Truly the standout of the show, and perhaps the Broadway season. I'll be anxious to see how it does in the "best song" category when Broadwayworld.com has the best-of poll around Tony Awards time.
