As Edna Turnblad.
I seriously think that in about twenty years, they should revive Hairspray on the Great White Way. And throw in Zac Efron, wherever he's lurking then, as Edna.
What with aging former heartthrobs like John Travolta and Michael Ball playing the role, I think it'd be pretty much irresistable. After all, you know that if "Hairspray" came out twenty years ago, Michael Ball would've been Link Larkin.
Now, don't get me wrong, I really don't like Zac Efron at all, and I think he's kind of creepy-looking, but if he were to play Edna Turnblad in a couple of decades, I'd go see the show in a heartbeat out of morbid curiosity.
"Aging Former Heartthrobs"
Ouch.
I'm not a hater of Efron...I'd actually like to see him play something to get a true judge of his abilities.
But I thought your idea was hysterical!
He'd be the most woman-like Edna to date.
Oh, and I think it's a brilliant idea.

yeah, well dont watch HSM obviously lol
but i honestly thought he was really good as link in the movie :)
Awww, don't get me wrong, Mildred, I am basically obsessed with Michael Ball, and I think he's still adorable. But you know, MB used to play all of the romantic leads-- Marius, Raoul, Alex, etc.-- and now he's moved on to being more of a character actor as he's gotten older, and he does both well. Zac Efron has all the little teenyboppers cooing over him, but I'd like to see him play a role like Edna once he's past that stage.
And I agree, he WOULD be the most feminine Edna yet. I wonder what his voice will sound like once he's middle-aged; I somehow can't imagine it.
Also, I have to say-- I think Zac Efron is a REALLY good dancer. And he is a decent performer, it's just the way he looks-- his mannerisms and his facial expressions that irritate me. But playing a comedic role means that he can milk all of that, and I honestly think he'd do a better job in that kind of part.

I heard he is doing the muical remake of Footloose next. He is not bad but completely over-rated imo.
Totally agree. :)

Awww, JP. <3
By the way, I have to ask... (don't get offended) is the picture in your avatar you? I saw your "I'm Not Corbin Bleu" song, and it made me stop a moment and think, 'cos I always assumed your avatar was Corbin Bleu until then. (That song has totally been in my head all day, by the way...)

JP2... your first post made me laugh out loud.. literally.
BTW.. loved your video of your trip to the 'Spray with Grandma. Love her! Was Charlotte Crossley in as Motormouth by then? How was she?

Yes, it's me lol.
Thanks Zaedy
Charlotte Crossley was AMAZING! Second favorite Maybelle after Jenifer Lewis.
The question is, who would play Velma and Wilbur?
velma will be ashley tisdale
Ha! How did I not think of that?
I think it's wierd you think he is "creepy looking". I am not a fan (although I thought he did well in Hairspray) but I definately don't think he is ugly or any of the subcatagories of ulgy (strange looking, creepy, gross, or whatever). I'd imagine most people are able to see he is attractive even if he is not their 'type'.
Or well, to each their own. :)
In twenty years I doubt he will be a house hold name let alone staring in a revial of Hairspray. Someone can prove me wrong in 20 years.
You don't... feel he resembles a muppet when he sings? Or that there's something sinister about his eyebrows?
Then it is just me. Ah.
But yeah, I think not being a 'household name' would actually inspire him to take a part like Edna. If he was still super-successful in twenty years, I doubt that's a role he'd accept.
