haha, I wasn't "doubting" him, I was just wondering if he could sing that fast...it's a pretty rappa dappa doo dah song, which takes a lot do do it well...but you're right, I'm sure he'd get it down.

To Mark Rascati: Norbert can pull off 'Great Big Stuff,' which is a patter song, so he can surely do 'The Museum Song.'

Still not as fast though...anyways, I would definately take a trip to NY just to see NLB or Raul take on this role....heck I'd probabily do it for anyone for the revival of Barnum...even though I haven't seen the movie yet, ha.

While I admire the show for some reason it didn't really engage me. Perhaps the central character really isn't that interesting (or pleasant for that matter) much like another Joe Layton show George M! (Whatever happened to Joe Layton?).

Layton passed away more than 10 years ago.

This is one of my all-time favorites, and Michael is brilliant in it. It's a real tour de force for him.
(For the record, whoever said Barnum cheats on his wife, the show only portrays him as coming close to it. I have no idea whether this little episode had any basis in reality or not -- obviously, the show as a whole is only very loosely based on the real man's life.)

I loved the Dale/Close Barnum way back when! I recall that George Burns sat in the seat directly behind me, and the line of people wanting autographs was long. Barnums competition at the Tony Awards was EVITA, Pump Boys and Dinettes and another show that escapes me. Anyone remember??

Did EVITA win?
(It's a serious question.)

4th show was A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine. (Pump Boys and Dinettes was '82).

"Norbert Leo Butz is a much better choice than Hugh to play Barnum."
I like Norbert, but NO WAY. He's just not right for the part physically or vocally. There are many roles he would be good for, but Barnum is not one of them.
"Norbert can pull off 'Great Big Stuff,' which is a patter song, so he can surely do 'The Museum Song.'"
Great Big Stuff is not a patter song. It is an uptempo song with some slow patter-style laundry list lyrics, but it is in no way comparable to the likes of a true patter song such as The Museum Song, Tchaikovsky, Getting Married Today or Modern Major General.
"4th show was A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine."
Another revival-worthy show, preferably with ME as Samovar the Lawyer, thank you very much! My favorite role I ever played, which actually led to other jobs as well. Terrific gem of a show.

I wish there was a photo online of Tony Walton's Act Two Ukraine set. The Graumann's Chinese Theatre set for Act One was cute and functional, with its swiveling doors and all. But when the curtain went up on the blood red and gold mansion set for Act Two, the audience I saw it with let out a collective gasp like nothing I've ever heard in a theatre before.

Well physically, jim dale was around 50 years old when he played Barnum, so you never know a true health until you test it. I think Norbert's range is pretty good for him.

Dale was a spry 45 when he did Barnum. Crawford had to have been around 40.

I also think that NLB would be TOTALLY wrong for Barnum, not only does he not look the part, I don't think he has the voice. It's much too 'rock-esque'
LOVE the movie. One of the most underrated musicals out there (as someone said)

It came today, and I watched it.
I actually saw this in class freshman year, but I'm more into musicals now, so I got to appreciate it a lot more.
anyways, I really enjoyed the staging, and the casting was wonderful. The scenes don't always go together with eachother, but that's not what the show was all about, I think. Good stuff.

I can't really see Norbert doing it - but Hugh Jackman would be great.
