See I think people who are not fond of the show to begin with - see the show with an open mind. And they leave the show pleased.
Personally - I think MEF didn't go into SC with an open mind. She expected to be crap, so what she got was crap.
What really irritates me is how people WANT to like certain shows. So if other's don't like them, they make excuses for the show. GET OVER IT - he didn't like the show. And mef doesn't seem like someone with a very closed mind to me. GEt a grip.
AMEN Munk - well said! I couldnt take one more minute of the dreadfully boring and unfuny production of THE RIVALS earlier this season at Lincoln Center and was out of there so fast at intermission, I didn't even care to see who was there (it was opening night)

Well to clarify, is it the show that's bad or the production? Like since it's a revival, was the orignal bad too? Or is just this new version?
I dont know cause I havent seen it yet, but my thoughts on SC are...
1) Its not THAT great of a musical to begin with.
2) A not so great revival of it wont help matters much.
I don't think I could leave a show at intermission, no matter how bad it is. I'm an optimist and would always hope it might improve.

You obviously were never FORCED to sit through the second act of BRING BACK BIRDIE.
Or JAKE'S WOMEN.

I loved the first act..it was the last half of the 2nd act i said "WTF is this!?!?!"
but I went for free *well, it's part of my tuition* in chicago..so i'm cool
Oooo - Mattio wins.
Or The Frogs.
I don't thing CHARITY is as strong a show as its classic status may lead some to believe. Maybe its because I have never seen a really dynamite production.
If I am there to do a review I feel I have an obligation to say until the very end.
And if I paid, I feel a personal obligation to stay. I have never walked out on a performance. YET.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
Melissa?
I can't believe it. We don't agree on something.
I liked Sweet Charity. I thought it was fun. I adore the music, the costumes (especially the lady dancer in purple with the elaborate feather headress.)
Denis O'Hare was adorable.
It was fun. Is it the best show I have ever seen? No, but I was entertained and I loved the dancing.
Think PURPLE.
At last Anatevka could be spelled right...
I just can't stand "If my Firends Could See Me Now" It gets stuck in my head more than any other song...
I just don't understand people that leave at intermission...I mean, what's the point in even posting an opinion of a show that you haven't seen in its entirety? If I would believe everything I review I read on this board I wouldn't make it through 10 minutes of any given show on the boards right now. I can't imagine leaving anything I've paid money for just so I can run home and tell everyone that I left. That's a bit of a cop-out...but that's just me!
Okay...and I'll fess up to it...I left the national tour of Stones in His Pockets at intermission. So I'm far from innocent in this matter.
It has to be really bad for me to leave.
If I could sit through PRYMATE, What of the Night, Bklyn then you know it takes a lot for me to leave.
I have left shows because of nausea or an emergency.
And once a show literally put me to sleep.

Me too Corine. And, again, it was PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.
I have never left a show. Granted I don't live in NY and so don't get to see a ton. But if there was an emergency then I would leave, but if I paid for it then I would stick it out.
Vincent the Musical put me into snoreland.
Speaking of snoreland.
Time for me to go, so long. Farewell. GOODNIGHT.

I don't think I would leave a show during intermission. I would hate that feeling of "what if it got better..." that I *know* would be stuck in my head. That said, I completely understand if a person chooses to do so. Its there money!
Though, LouieLovesTheater, all mef said was that he thought it was terrible and left. I don't think you have a right to criticize him for saying that. If he gave a detailed review of the first act and problems with the book, score, and performers that might be another story - you never know what will happen in the second act. But, just saying that you left during intermission is merely a fact not a review.
You left STONES IN HIS POCKETS? What a truly great show!
I wouldn't think twice about leaving a show I didn't like. I thought very hard about leaving NEVER GONNA DANCE and GOOD VIBRATIONS, but decided to wait it out. The only thing I walked out of was BYE BYE BIRDIE at City Center.
The only thing I walked out on was Linda Eder in concert. She was so drunk, she couldn't get the words out without slurring.
Sorry...I'm sure "Stones" was a good show but not the version I saw. Maybe it was Bronson Pinchot or something but I physically couldn't stay for the second act. It was just not an option. And I wasn't the only one who left that day. I still feel bad about not staying though.
And munk, yeah there was no actual review but still...did we all really read this thread thinking that mef left at intermission to come and tell us how great the show was? It was an implied review so I do apologize for jumping to conclusions. And everyone is entitled to their opinon - it just always bugs me when people say 'I left at intermission and hated the WHOLE show!'...I sometimes think staying and suffering makes you a better theater-goer. Are there things I want to leave at intermission (hell, even halfway through the first act!)...sure but I stay just to say I saw it.
