"The Debbie Allen revival was a moderate hit and the original was a VERY big hit. GOT IT?"
Quote from "More Opening Nights on Broadway" by Steven Suskin, page 898......
"Charity" ultimately emerged lustrous but somewhat uneven and heartless; Verdon's performance and Fosse's staging, though, were more than sufficient to carry the show to MODERATE success. Producer Fryer and his partners didn't much mind the lack of "SMASH" status; they had a second leading lady- Mame-tuning the grand up for a May opening".
GOT IT?

Thanks for finding that, Demitri...it doesn't sound like much of a bomb, though, either.
Demitri2,
Thanks for finding that. I guess different books have different recollections. the show made them a lot of money. And was never a flop.
No NBC is wasn't a bomb but once Verdon left the show it closed shortly after with the accomplished Helen Gallagher taking over the lead...so even in its original incarnation it was obvious how important this show depended on a charismatic, truly talented leading lady since the vehicle itself was flawed.
And no ne is arguing that. This is a beloved show by many that will always live. Wether in its current revival, future revivals and may stock and regional companies.
Ya know Dame...I got a response e-mail from you the other day that said "GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!!!"
I'd like to return those words to you.
Honey;
I have my facts straight. It is what I do for a living. What is your problem honey?
I'm still happy to be going on the 18th to see Christina make her Broadway debut. Some seem to like it, some not. Sounds like a lot of other shows that are going on!

I am a little confused. Every book or reliable theater source I read states Sweet Charity as a hit. God knows it is definitely liked by many. So where is this wrong information coming from? And demitri..if something was written to you in form of a pm.. why don't you keep it that way instead of spreading hate?
Good Lord....
We could argue for days over whether a show was a hit or not..all reviews and theater history books are subjective, due to author opinion input.
Let's realize something first....we are feeding into WISH's wish that he turn these threads from people talking about THIS production and it's merits/misses to threads about whether the sixites and eighties versions of the shows were hits!!
Let's not go there and give pathetic WISH his ultimate joy.
I'll tell you what the problem is "honey". We're all entitled to our own opinions. For you to yell at me with the words "GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!!!" is a bit offensive to me. If you read my earlier posts on this thread then I need to ask you..."What facts do I need to get straight?".

Yes you are entitled to your OPINIONS! But don't state them as FACTS! God you are a bitch!
Pick-a-little talk-a-little pick-a-little talk-a-little CHEEP CHEEP CHEEP talk-a-lot pick-a-little-more...
demitri,
I just went through all my "sent" pm's and have not found one time I have PM'ed you. Maybe you have your different on line personalities confused? Because I normally don't talk to people that throw hissy fits like you.
I would like to gently call your attention to the following thread.

Oh my...I haven't been blessed since my confirmation! After that, I just gave over to sin!
oh. my. goodness. Are you people SERIOUS????
What is with this high holy pretentiousness? If a person is having an awful time and 1. they paid for their own ticket and 2. they don't owe someone in the production staying until the end, they have every right to leave at intermission! Hell, when I've had an aisle seat in the back--I've left after the first ten minutes!
That's dandy that you suffer through the full show, but some of us aren't masochists.
Yea, people who think it's rude to leave a show at any point need to get a grip.
Amen, JRB - A-Frigging-Men!
I don't like it when I see people leave at intermission at my theatre. But it's a fact of life. Sometimes they miss out on some key plot twist or redeeming scene.
Now the people who get up mid-act from visible seats should be shot on sight.
JRB,
You are 100 % right. I left at intermision of 1776. It was both my money and time wasted.
Aw, I LOVE 1776!
I didn't think that 1776 generally had an intermission?
And I knowa lot of people that also love that show. just not me. Just like a lot of people love Charity and other don't.
