Why isn't the most recent posting to a thread viewed first when you click on a subject? Instead you get the 1st comment and then have to click the last page number to view the most recent comment. Figure there's a reason for it.

I imagine it's organized in this way so that someone can read the development of a conversation in chronological order; it shouldn't assume that everyone has followed every comment, especially when some threads have dozens (even hundreds) of pages.
If you want to skip right to the most recent page of the conversation, you can click on the link under the "Last Comment" column.
