I am, by no means, new to Rent. I've been listening to the cast recording religiously for quite sometime, but yesterday was my first opportunity to see it. And here I am, throwing my two cents in. *grins* Since I'm not a theatre person (*giggle*) I'll just write things randomly as I think of them.
Our seats were in the nosebleed section. I could see all of the action on stage, but I couldn't see any facial expressions... however, last night was probably one of the best nights of my life. The show was AMAZING, even from a kajillion feet away. Halfway through "Another Day" I started to cry because it was sooooo beautiful and real. Rent has always been a recording for me, and now it was real. *sigh*
I really enjoyed everyone's performance. The chemistry was wonderful between all the characters, though it probably would've been better if I could actually see more of them! The Fargodome isn't a very good place for theatre, at least not for Rent. It seems it could be soooo much more powerful in a more intimate setting... I had people sitting behind me who would comment on everything as it happened. "It's a year later, now..." and "I think this is when Mimi dies..." Very annoying.
But apart from that... I spent most of the second act bawling my eyes out. Especially during I'll Cover You (Reprise)... there was one particularly long moment of silence where you could hear sniffles throughout the entire place... it was beautiful.
Ummm... yeah. Not the best review ever written, but it's my first. There aren't too many opportunites for experiencing good theatre when you're a college student living in the boonies of Minnesota. But last night was a gem. Yay!
awww i'm so happy for you!! I love when people get excited seeing the show for the first time
Yeah, my first performance of RENT I was way far away, too, and it sucks but hey, it's still RENT so woohoo!! If you ever get a chance, there is NOTHING like seeing that show at the Nederlander! It's the perfect theatre, and small enough so you ca nsee good from pretty much everywhere. I had 4th row center seats, and it was the most amazing time of my life! Ah listen to me babbling on...RENT does that to me lol but good review!!
Thank you for that...I'm glad you had such a nice time.
that sounds amazing! Its the same with me, I religiously listen to the cast recording but have never seen it live. I think it'll be the first thing I do when I graduate from high school. Go to New York and see RENT.
I am also so happy that you enjoyed the show! I love it and every time i see it, i am still affected by the messages. I have not seen the tour but from what i hear it is great. Glad you had fun!!!

Yay for you! My first Rent show was in Providence, RI at the Providence Performing Arts Center and that Constantine guy who was recently on American Idol was Roger and we went out to dinner after the show and he was there and I got to meet him and stuff it was really cool.
I'm glad you had a fun night!

For those that have seen the show a gazillion times and are bored with it (and often just wish it would close?)
People like this are the reason I'm glad it's still there. There are many who are still discovering/appreciating the show - and some lose sight of that while ranting about how "tired" the show is now.
Glad you had a great time

becky i completely agree!!! i'm glad you had fun seeing it.. now get your butt to nyc and see it on broadway baby!! lol
I agree Becky! I know that there are alot of people out there who are think the show has come to the end of its tether but for people like me there is still that giant anticipation for the day that I will get to see the show for the first time. I can't wait to see it live and get blown away by it. I'm such a sap during shows, I will be sobbing the whole time and I look foward to the day where I can leave my own review of the show on here.
Becky, I was just going to say that! It's remarkable that this show is still inspiring and finding new fans. Sometimes I forget that not everyone has seen this, and it's so wonderful that people are still managing to fall in love with it. Despite what people say, I think the story and message are incredibly timeless and that is definitely being proven.
I agree completely munkustrap178. (me being one of the newer fans, I didn't really start to like RENT til the beginning of last year.)
