"Big stars of yesteryear knew-- Touring is how you build a fan base and how you become a bigger draw. It's a shame that more stars won't invest the time and effort in touring."

Very nicely put, Joe! That is one of the points I was trying to make.

I think there is also a difference between originating a role on Broadway and continuing with the show on the road (i.e. if Sutton tours LW), then start touring a show in a role they didn't originate. I guess it is seen as a "step back", but as an actor you go where the work is.

I think its great when "big names" (to us atleast) tour. I was excited to hear that Anthony was doing the LSoH tour - and preparing to drive to Baltimore or Philly to see it, and was disappointed that he left (but for good reason - RENT movie!).

Stars "too big" to tour are a major reason Broadway is becoming less relevant outside of New York. (Note I write "Broadway" not "theater".) New York City might be large and diverse but sometimes the attitudes displayed are really quite provincial.

Excuse me, but no one's going to see Sutton Foster on Broadway. What makes you think they'll go to see her on the road? Maureen McGovern is a bigger name out there. Probably here too. People don't become theatre stars much anymore.
Tv and movie and recording personalities are the ones who generate box office on the road, and on Broadway too, for that matter.
