Posted: 9/14/05 at 5:38pmI hope they aren't being cocky. I read on imdb.com that people think that the producers believe the film won't need much publicity because a) it's a Mel Brooks film; b) it was a hit on Broadway and b) it won 14 Tony's. My answer is: a) The Phantom of the Opera is a much bigger hit, pulling 99% capacity numbers in every city it plays, and with a tour still going strong,17 years after opening; b)The Producers, three years after opening, never sells out, and is no longer touring c) The Produces tour did do as well as they thought, and the shows success is now tied to Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick d) The Phantom of the Opera, film, had no advertising campaign, other than a few ads in Playbill and a trailer attached to three low grossing films e) The Phantom of the Opera film flopped, inspite of grossing over $3 billion and being the mosts seen Broadway show in history. I really hope the producers of The Producers don't think the film will sell itself. Musicals aren't popular, regardless of whether or not it is a Mel Brooks film.

Posted: 9/14/05 at 7:35pmIf The Producers' producers are trying to build up suspence, they'd better rethink. An awful lot of the movie-going public couldn't care less about Broadway, and won't care how many Tony's it won. I don't recall that the original movie of The Producers (with Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder) was a big hit. They need to get some advertising going pronto, if they plan to compete with the holiday blockbusters.

Posted: 9/14/05 at 7:44pmExactly Grizabella. I've been arguing with someone who keeps pointing out that my Phantom/Producers comparison didn't work because The Producers won 14 Tony's. I keep pointing out that, while true, it doesn't change the fact that The Phantom of the Opera is the MOST successful Broadway show of all time and consistantly sells out, yet flopped at the box office. The Producers, on the otherhand, can only attribute its success among theatregoers to Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. Chicago had a MUCH better campaign, but more importantly, great word of mouth and reviews.

Posted: 9/14/05 at 8:01pmI have said it again on another thread a couple of weeks ago ! "The Producers" studio's contempt for the fans is so evident and annoying ! I really hope that RENT trumps it big time in the Box Office, not only because I love RENT waaaaaaaayyy more than The Producers, but because Sony is going out of their way to please the fans of the show, even if it's only for marketing purposes !

Posted: 9/14/05 at 8:55pmThat is so true, Greekmusicalfan! That same principle was one of the reasons that the Tolkien fans took to the Lord of the Rings movies a few years back. New Line, and the folks at Peter Jackson's Wingnut Films went out of the way to court them during the 15 months of filming and production. Obviously, Sony noticed and learned the same lesson. I hope the producers at The Producers catch on soon. There are some nice people in that production that deserve a box office success.

Maybe Universal's attempting to somehow ride on the coat tails of RENT's publicity? lol. hear me out. there's so much hype and buzz about RENT and The Producers is often mentioned in one form or another whenever RENT is being talked about (via media or word of mouth) simply because it's another move musical coming out around the same time. Maybe the folks at Universal are gunning for minimum publicity until RENT opens and becomes a big success (as it looks like it should be) and then flood the media with Producers stuff, essentially having people go, "Oh, wow, 'RENT' was such a great movie musical, now I want to go see 'The Producers!'" A silly theory? yes, lol, but in a twisted way (just as hollywood tends to work, haha) it makes a lot of sense.
that having been said, I really don't believe that and think Universal's just being cocky, thinking everyone knows about the movie already. They don't. I have avid Theatre friends who were unaware a month or so ago that the movie was coming out so soon and didn't realize the Will Ferrel and Uma Thurman castings were set in stone (once again, i don't even think they realized filming was already begun.) Speaking of Ferrel and Thurman, I think we can expect the trailer (whenever it comes out) to feature these two a bit more than one would expect, seeing as it's really Matthew and Nathan's movie. Granted people know who Matthew Broderick is and most know Nathan Lane, as Rathnait said, I don't think these two alone are going to sell the movie. at least not to non-theatre audiences. I for one can't wait to see these two in the movie, but I've got pleanty of friends who are drooling over Will Ferrel's involvment, and I think he may be the big selling point for Universal. He's HUGE right now. Following the Kill Bill's, Thurman's got that same kind of appeal.
In closing......PUT OUT THE F*CKING TRAILER!!!!!!!!
Thank you.
