I have to agree with redhot on She Loves Me, I saw it last night and everything just moved so perfectly. I love that show!
Sweeny, Into The Woods, and I think Ragtime and Passion are pretty brilliant as well.

RAGTIME to me was the perfect musical to me. I absolutely adore this show and would and could see it over and over again.

As much as I love Pippin, I think the book has a lot to be desired(there is just something about the book of Stephen Schwartz musicals)

I agree with Sweeney, of course, but I've always said The Music Man is the perfect musical.

quintessential musical theatre: sweeney todd (i know sonheim describes sweeney as not doing the following, but i admire it for almost creating its own genre. it is like an operetta, as he describes it, but at times feels like a musical drama, a soap opera, and a comedy, and sometimes all 4 at the same time. i mean AMAZING!)
overlooked "could-be": once upon a mattress

This is fun!
I have to go with some of the classics...
With one small exception, and it's totally a personal issue with it, I feel that GYPSY is a perfect musical...the exception:the ending. I think the show should end after Rose's Turn. Historically, it's more accurate and I think the way the ending is written now is a bit of a cop out.
Also: WEST SIDE STORY...it's just brilliant, as well as Porgy and Bess-SO beautiful.
I feel like the responsibility of making a perfect musical belongs to the writers and those who originally develop the show and I don't feel it's a judgement that can be made until the show has had the opportunity to stand the test of time somewhat.
my reasoning: I think a perfect show should be director/actor-proof. Meaning that even a production in the middle of Wisconsin starring third graders can still be produced effectively, story in tact. I think some of the picks here have not really proven director-proof.
just my opinion I guess.

I'm going to break ranks here and name LES MIZ as the perfect musical. It has, IMO, a perfect balance of elements.
I believe a lot of critics consider GUYS AND DOLLS the perfect musical, almost foolproof in execution.
