re: IF YOU COULD F#CK....

Sweeney Todd is PERFECT. The streamlining of Book, Music and Lyrics is phenomenal. However, as it does not contain dance, one could not call it definative of the genre (as has been mentioned).
West Side Story takes that cake.
Gypsy almost takes that cake.
Wicked doesn't even take a crumb.

Porgy and Bess is just a phenomenal score, whether or not it is an opera or a musical. It has some of the most wonderful musics ever composed. "Bess, You is my Woman" is one of the most wonderful duets both to sing and listen to. "Summertime" is just a gem. "My Man's Gone Now" is so moving, and brilliant in the way it captures Serena's grief. I could go on...but I won't.

re: IF YOU COULD F#CK....

In terms of perfection, I would pick West Side Story, Passion, and Assassins. I thought the structure was great for all 3 and they all happen to be by Sondheim.

Has to be Les Mis for me!

I love the characters, the story, the music... there isn't anything I really don't enjoy about it.

re: IF YOU COULD F#CK....

Personally Sweeney but I don't think it has happened yet I mean...the PERFECT musical

Perfect implies that it would AT LEAST have to appeal to all ages and I really don't think there is one that does yet.

So I am still waiting for it to happen
When someone blunders, we say that he makes a misstep. Is it then not clear that all the ills of mankind, all the tragic misfortunes that fill our history books, all the political blunders, all the failures of the great leaders have arisen merely from a lack of skill in dancing. - Moliere

who put the F#CK on there?

re: IF YOU COULD F#CK....

This is a really difficult question, because you can never be objective. I mean, how can I classify a musical as perfect, if I didn't love it ? I think that there are no laws in theater, someone can perceive a show as a masterpiece and someone else as pure crap. Art in general, can be judged only through an individual's beliefs and feelings.
So, for me the most whole rounded examples of a musical are
West Side Story, Chicago, Les Mis, Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon and Rent. And from the latest ones, Hairspray.

Take care

re: IF YOU COULD F#CK....

West Side Story and the Sound of Music are two shows that immediately come to mind.

re: IF YOU COULD F#CK....

Well... my personal favorite is Hairspray, but I'm not about to say it's perfect (maybe for me, but not for everyone)

So I'd have to go with Showboat, just because it was the first of it's kind and had pretty much every genre possible. Which would appeal to as many people as possible. My 7 year old cousin just liked looking at the big boat in the movie.

I would say West Side Story, but it made me into a wreck for a week, and I'm still a little mad at it....
What is it about Lucy?? I know she's a bitch, and yet I want to be her...

re: IF YOU COULD F#CK....

West Side Story is the closest thing to perfection that I know. Its so sad that the year of West Side Story had to be the year of The Music Man because those are probably 2 of the best musicals there ever were, and they couldn't both win the Tony. But I guess in the end, they've both won.

re: IF YOU COULD F#CK....

I'm actually VERY surprised that WEST SIDE STORY has made this list. Even the creators made changes to their 'perfect' musical for the film. The biggest improvement being 'America'.

People argue about the placement of 'Krupke' and 'Cool' in the film, but, imo, the dramatic arc of the story is better served by the construction of the movie, not the stage piece.

Mine 2 cents:

re: IF YOU COULD F#CK....

I still say Sweeny Todd.

But I agree with Greekmusicalfan. I don't think Art can be perfect, cause it's useless. How can something so useless be perfect?

Sorry, I love Dorian Grey.

re: IF YOU COULD F#CK....

i've never seen a 'perfect' musical. there are brilliant ones: like Sweeny Todd, and ones that i like alot: Hair, Taboo, Caroline or Change. But i doubt there will ever be a PERFECT musical.

BTW- NEW ICON! YAAAY!

re: IF YOU COULD F#CK....

I do not know how, but the SWEENEY TODD fans have been multiplying and multiplying.

I remember a time when it would rarely get a mention.

It makes me happy to see it get picked so many times.

re: IF YOU COULD PICK....

SWEENEY TODD gets my vote....

Perfect does not mean appealing to all ages... it's about dramatic structure...and musical themes...

Each character in the musical has a theme that is repised if only as underscoring or counterpoint.

a completely developed plot... and three dimensional characters....
