Following the May 13 announcement that IN THE HEIGHTS had earned 13 Tony Award nominations, the box office for the musical boomed as if someone had won the lottery.
A production spokesperson confirmed the accuracy of a report in Variety that the Washington Heights-set show (in which a main character gets a state lottery windfall) wrapped about $200,000 on Tuesday. That figure was topped on Wednesday.

"I have also met him in person, and I find him to be quite funny actually. Arrogant and often misinformed, but still funny."

I think this jump is by people like me, who were put off by the hip-hop and rap score, but just had to see the next best musical.
It won't last, the demographic just dosn't do Broadway.

Posted: 5/15/08 at 7:29pmNothing unusual about that. Its the same report that comes out every year! What did 'The Producers' take on the following day- the size of a small European county's budget we were told!

Yes, but unlike something like Passing Strange it hasn't been on TKTS before.
Passing Strange is on TKTS all the time.
I am glad that my new favorite show is doing so well.
I do think that demographics change. And, that it isn't fair to say that In The Heights plays to a demographic that doesn't do Broadway.
I am not trying to boast this as the next Rent. But, when Rent opened young people didn't go to the Broadway theatre. It got young people to go more often and look at all the rush programs on Broadway for young people to use due to the lack of money.
I have seen a lot of people that have the typical "inner city" look at In the Heights. People that you wouldn't think would be at a Broadway theatre even if you paid them. Yet, there they are. Proof that demographics do change.
I have even seen people who are more urban in how they look pass by the theatre and say that this is something that they want to see.

Posted: 5/15/08 at 8:27pmSo do you think it will be hard to get tickets in July? I want to go see it for my birthday, but I'd rather just go to the box office and buy them, rather than pay the Ticketmaster fee.

Good for them!
Hopefully, other shows will benefit like this, especially the ones who could use a boost. (i.e. Passing Strange)

"Amen, I hope it lasts many years! New Wicked!"
as long as that is only in reference to the grosses and NOT to the lotto.
Cages or wings? Which do you prefer? Ask the birds. Fear or love, baby? Don't say the answer Actions speak louder than words. (Tick, Tick... BOOM!)

Sorry to burst your bubble Winston. It certainly has been on TKTS. You can look on there web site and see. It was there last week a matter of fact. And then you have to bash another show. Just really SAD, and trully bogus I must say.
