I get what you're saying, and I don't disagree. To be fair I'm a big fan of his to begin with, and I felt it was the best role to come his way in over a decade. The problem with Kevin always struck me as more of a book issue. There isn't really a whole lot of real conflict written into the plot, so I sort of liked having the father figure as more of a hard-ass- since every other character is written to be likable (to a fault, it seems). And the solo alone was more than enough to add a little background as to why Kevin is so unwavering and severe at first. Personally I found Vanessa to be the only character I really didn't have any sympathy for. Karen was fine and the songs are good, but I can't get past the feeling that her main purpose in the show is to look good and complain.

I can't believe in a little over a month, a man will be singing "Piragua" on Broadway. Times they are a-changin', and I'm so excited!
Piragua! probably the best piece of scene-change filler music written in years. "So sweet and nice piragua..."
