Icke's HAMLET to Transfer to Broadway?

Saw a rumor that a transfer starring Timothée Chalamet is in the works. I enjoyed it very much at the Armory, but there's no doubt that the lack of a big star in the lead role made the run far less buzzy than the London production with Andrew Scott. With Chalamet, though, I think it could be huge.

Thoughts?

I’d rather see him in his canceled “4000 Miles” instead of the 4000th revival of “Hamlet”.

Chalamet fits the character of Hamlet on paper, but I don’t think he can handle it. The more I see him act, the more I’m convinced he skates by on his brooding stoicism. I don’t think he works well in more wordy, intellectual roles.

He was in a movie a few years ago called The King, which was an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Henry IV and V. This was dumbed down, faux Shakespeare, and yet Chalamet was still way out of his depth. He delivered all his lines like he had memorized them phonetically, seemingly oblivious to what he was actually saying.

I think he’d be even more at sea in one of Shakespeare’s most difficult roles. There would be no depth, probably just a lot of going back and forth between yelling and smoldering.

This strikes me as someone's personal rumor that has taken on a small life of its own. I'd think Chalamet, if he had the time and inclination to do a show, would rather see himself in something other than a cash grab replacement cast. I think he may want to do his own Hamlet some day, but not this.

That'd be cool, but Timmy's incredibly busy right now. He has the Dune sequel and a Bob Dylan biopic to shoot, plus he'll be doing publicity for "Wonka" and who knows what else. It'd be tough to imagine he'd have time for more than a very limited engagement.

I also can't help but be That Guy and point out that despite the cliche, Hamlet on Broadway is not very common at all - it's been more than a decade since it was last produced on Broadway and that production was 14 years after the previous one.

I'd rather see Oresteia transfer. Either as-is (Anastasia Hille was tremendous), or with someone like Cate Blanchett or Nicole Kidman or Laura Linney. (Hey, a person can dream!) I think the response in London and New York illustrates that these productions do not rely on a specific ensemble of actors to work.

Some of the most thrilling theatre I've seen post-pandemic.

No way either production could transfer without stars. Both productions heavily papered throughout their Armory runs.
