I am sixteen right now, and I've always been involved with theatre.
I recently made my way to London to see Wicked, Les Mis, Phantom, Mary Poppins and Billy Elliot.
If I go to NYC for my birthday, what shows would you recommend?
I'm wanting the real awe-factor for my first Broadway shows :)
see the 25th annual putnam county spelling bee,
Hairspray,
or Rent.
in that order.
Spring Awakening
Color Purple
A Chorus Line
Putnam County Spelling Bee
RENT

I've heard a lot about Spring Awakening and I've heard some of the music and loved it, is it as good as it's hyped up to be?
What's Spelling Bee about? It's the show I know the least about, out of the ones you've mentioned.

Any show should be fine for you. However, if you see Spring Awakening, see it ALONE. My advice is to not see shows that you can see in London.
A Chorus Line without a doubt.
If I were you, I'd go for A Chorus Line, Spring Awakening, and if you're into fluff and fun and want something like that, Legally Blonde.
Also, I find that Mary Poppins is one of my favorite shows and is very good for the "first Broadway show awe" that you want :)
Well I'm 16 and the shows that I really enjoy are are Spelling Bee,Spring Awakening, and Drowsy Chaperone. Spelling Bee is about what the title says, a spelling bee. It's hilairious. I've seen it five times. Spring Awakening is about teens growing up in 19th century Germany and experiencing sexual awakenings, set to a score of folk/alternative rock music. Don't see it with your parents unless your comfortable watching movies with sex scenes and nutity with them. Drowsy Chaperone is about a man who is obsessed with a 20's musical called "The Drowsy Chaperone" and puts the record on and the show sort of comes alive in his apartment. It's very Brechtian, if you know what that means. You'll enjoy this is your a big theatre lover.
Other shows that people my age love are:
Wicked
Hairspray
Rent
Legally Blonde
A Chorus Line
Xanadu
Phantom
Les Mis
Grease

When would you be going to the city, perhaps Young Frankenstein, when it comes to Broadway? Also, you should take Curtains into consideration.
A Chorus Line.

I am 17 and love everything. I think age shouldn't be a factor in what you see once you are 14. Just choose what seems most appealing to you, because everything fits your age bracket.
Jersey Boys
Spring Awakening
Rent
A Chorus Line
The Color Purple
Lion King

17 is old enough that you don't really have to ask shows for 17 year olds.
I'm seeing Spring Awakening and Curtains in less than a week, so I'll get back to you on that
A Chorus Line
Rent
Spring Awakening or Avenue Q!
Legally Blonde definitely!!!
Mark, when are you seeing them?
I wouldn't want LB to be my first Broadway show, but that's just me...

"Mark, when are you seeing them? "
I'm seeing Spring Awakening on Friday the 17th and Curtains the day after. And I think I'm going to try to rush or tkts a show on thursday.
Why do you ask? Are you going too?
First of all, happy birthday! I'm 17 and I would recommend RENT if you want something awe-inspiring.
I think Avenue Q is amazingly funny, but no awe-factor, so to speak. It depends on the type of show you want to see. Spelling Bee is a laugh too, but also doesn't have the same power that RENT does. (Of course, as you can tell from my name I'm a little biased, but what I'm saying is all true as well.) A Chorus Line probably would be a good one, very big and wow-factor-ish.
I'm sure you'll enjoy whatever you see... I love it all too.
I'm seeing Curtains on the 15th and SA on the 16th.

Now that I think of it, that's actually exactly a week.
I guess it's farther away than I thought it was.
Girls like shows like Wicked and Legally Blonde. If they are mature they might like Spring Awakenings and Rent. And of course there's Q!
SweetQ, just remember I'm a 17 year old girl and while Wicked is a great spectacle I don't really like the show, and I have no desire to see Legally Blonde.
I stand by what I said before. And yes, you will likely like Spring Awakening.
