You should write a musical about on-line post boards!
I can't think of any ideas specifically, but maybe you could write a musical about a historical event/person that's not widely known.
Anastsia the Musical (1997 film) with Ashley Brown as Anya (Tony included)and Terrance Mann as Rasputin in his big return!
Your Ashley Brown obsession is starting to get annoying.

Wow guys, these are great...now I have alot to choose from...Keep em coming!!!
Here, let this poem be inspiration. It's called Like a Dream and write a love story based on it......GO
Here I sit, thinking only of you
Wondering what is to become of us
Understanding all you have been through
Hoping to slowly gain your trust
My heart aches for you, and also I yearn
I want to understand you
In hopes that I will learn
Your unique and special qualities amaze me
Your smile
Your mind
Your voice and its beautiful sound
Your eyes
Your hair
Your ability to cheer me up
When you see that I am down
My feelings for you go beyond that of words
And at first it didn't seem real
But that just taught me a lesson
In doubting what I feel
It seems I dreamed you into life
And the reason for my stare
The bluest sky
The deepest sea
Don't even compare
Becky, you're so very special in every single way
And thoughts of you
Run through my head
Every hour of the day
I hope that you will understand
Just how I feel about you
I want to be your guiding hand
For all that you go through

Im looking for something commercial...but with the ability to be performed anywhere... low budget/high budget anything should work with the material.

Inspired by Floyd Collins, I was thinking about how unconventional some musical plots are, when it occured to me, as a psych major...
PHINEAS GAGE! THE MUSICAL!
Oh man, it works on so many levels!

You'd have to explain that one to me ... maybe I'm ignorant...or just a non-psyc major..but I have no clue what that is.

Phineas Gage was a railroad worker impaled in the head with a rod. He survived, but it damaged his frontal lobe, thus altering his personality so that he became more aggressive and angry.
Oh, I thought of another idea I had a while ago... Don Juan Tenorio would make a good musical. It's a take on the don Juan legend which has him redeemed at the end by his love, doña Inés.

Haha, if you don't mind lack of experience, that'd be awesome! People tell me I'm a good writer.
Forrest Gump - The Musical!!!
Song Ideas -
Bein an idiot aint easy to be,
Lifes no box 'o' chocs as you can see.
So ill just sit on my bench all day long,
twiddlin my thumbs and singin this song.
ITS A SELLOUT!!! I think Forrest Gump would work really well on stage.
I think it is always best to do at least one original idea, because you have no idea if you can get the rights to do a musical based on a previous work. That's just me though.
Welcome to the boards, SWIS!
I would definitely go for something original--Broadway is too commercialized these days. The best shows (IMO) recently have been the ones that WERE original and fresh.
That being said, I have a couple of ideas myself for musicals that I want to write when I have time......the only problem is, I suck at writing songs!
Since this thread is up....and I've been meaning to ask on the boards for awhile--
Where can I find books of musicals so that I can look at the structure it is written in? I know that not everyone who writes the book composes the music or lyrics. Is the structure like a regular screenplay? I have a program on my computer called "Scriptware" (I think) from when I wrote a movie screenplay for a class three or four years ago.
I don't know if a musical would be in the same format or not. I've gone to the library, but never find any books of musicals or books about writing musicals.....only screenplays and musical books by composers who have done the entire show themselves.
If I were to complete either of the stories I have running through my head, what would I do from there? Any tips or suggestions?
Thanks!

How about a musical about waiting in the destists office?

All about the waiting room?
Think about that....how bored do you get while sitting there waiting?...now think...how bored would you get WATCHING someone wait?
I am the LAST person to want to encourage adapting contemporary (or even classic) films to the Broadway musical stage, but last night I saw this new movie called THE LAKE HOUSE and it struck me it would make an interesting musical/chamber opera.
The basic pemise: 2 people who happen to have lived in the same house but several years apart are corresponding from two different time periods. They fall in love through their letters. Though the film goes off the rails in a few spots, the idea is fascinating. Then again, I like stories that play with time.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

They made something as boring as a spelling bee work. It'd be a challange but it could turn out to be very funny and original.

oh well when you bring that up I get your angle...ok it would be REALLY hard, but yes very funny if done correctly

Actually, I like the idea. You could have various personal stories intertwined... everyone in a different situation... You know how everyone randomly chit chats in dentist's offices, you get to know some people really well! It's like waiting in line to get into the bathroom.
