I <3 Idina. She sings with so much depth that it is almost hypnotic. Sutton just doesn't have that. Don't get me wrong, I think Sutton is amazing but Idina is absoutly amazing.

sutton doesn't HAVE it?!? ....wow. ridiculous. sutton is the one of the most well-rounded performers on Broadway. she is ALWAYS in the moment. always. wow. horrible comparison. yes, idina has great presence. but a light SHOOTS out of sutton when she walks on a stage. "doesn't have it". what is this world coming to?????
I think the plain, simple answer - and one that doesn't include the word "amazing" - is that it has a lot to do with the shows to which they're attached. Idina's been in two shows that are highly geared toward young people, have had phenomenal amounts of success, and have garnered HUGE followings. Sutton's been a lot more low-key.
Honestly, I think Sutton is FAR more talented, and a far more well-rounded perfomer, as one of our best triple-threats. But, their strengths are also so different, that it's difficult to compare, really. Would you put Idina in Little Women or Sutton in RENT? *snort* No. They're both suited for very different material. You don't compare actors by how many "<3's" you give them, or how many times you think you should use the word amazing when describing them. Well, maybe you do, but you don't *actually* consider that valid. Good God.
emcee, i thought that was Ray Romano. HAHA. i was confused as to where your loyalties were shiffing to, but alas, i knew you could never betray the 2 loves of your life. that is a scary picture.

I disagree with bwaybaby891. I find the opposite to be true for me. I've seen both ladies perform a few times and I find myself captivated when Sutton sings. I don't get that same hypnosis with Idina...not that I don't enjoy her performances.

rotfl, mill_fan. Well, certainly not for Ray Romano! heh. That's my Drama Queen and his... I can't even call them jazz hands. Oh, Raúl.
Anyway, yes. Back to the discussion.
1. Lea Salonga [my role model]
2. Idina Menzel... no question comes in second over Sutton. Though I love Sutton Foster and she is my number 3.
3. Sutton Foster... still, I prefer Idina to her. Obviously, as emcee said, they are very different types of musicals, but this is my overall list of favorite female Broadway vocalists.
I would see a musical with either of them in it ~kangaroo
RENThead, enLIGHist, Ozalot, Grobanite, Ringer, Pickwick LW, Wicked, Lost, American Dreams, West Wing
Lea S. Hugh J. Adam P. Idina M. Matt M. Taye D.
But Lea, Idina, and Sutton foster are different...although Lea is a much better Eponine than Sutton - for the fact that it's LEA SALONGA!
I know that they are all different and their voices are very different also, but the list I showed you was just my personal list of my top three favorites. But as I mentioned before, I would love to see any of them on Broadway. I would probably go instantly go see Lea or Idina and possibly wait a little bit for Sutton, but maybe that is becuase they have both been off Broadway for a while... [one a LITTLE longer than the other...]

the whole idea of the "triple threat" and the fact that there are so few people who do it well is what i think draws me to sutton. i have loved idina since her RENT days, but once i saw sutton, she absolutley captivated (i so just stole that word from someone else, but it's the only one that really describes it) me. she has that incredible traditional broadway style, and i love it. but don't get me wrong - idina is diva, just in different ways.
it's clear that the shows they have been in have really defined them and placed them where they are now as well as providing their fan base. in any case, and regardless of who is "better", i hope that we all get a chance to see them back on stage soon!

They are two COMPLETELY different performers and BOTH sooooo talented! LOVE them both! Though I would never want to see Idina's Millie Dilmount, I would LOVE to see Sutton's Elphaba!!!! :0)

I can tell which one I like better just by reading this thread (even though I already knew). But when Idina gets "put down" it's ok with me. No big deal. But when Sutton gets "put down", I find myself getting all defensive in my head. Lol.
ETA- but I still stand to my argument that the two are so different they can hardly be compared.

me too!
i didn't intend the post to be a comparison of the two performers per say, i was just curious about why one's fan base seems to be so much more obsessive than the other.
if you ask me i can't choose. I've seen both Idina and Sutton live and feel pretty lucky to have had the chance. Like people have been saying above they really can't be compared cause the shows they have been in are so different but with that being said THEY ARE SO INCREDIBLY AWESOME AND GREAT PERFORMERS IT ISN'T EVEN FUNNY! too bad i didn't get to meet either of them
Like PJ said, for me, would be like a mother choosing one child over the other. I love them for different reasons. To me, both are brilliant actresses and great singers. Sutton is more consistent vocally, but Idina has unbelievable solo work. So...yeah.
Anyway, I think Idina has more contemporary style which causes a lot of people more geared toward mainstram work to like her.
