why do you think idina has such a rabid fan following, while sutton's is so much smaller? they are both so incredibly talented (and obviously, WICKED is a huge part of idina's overwhelming popularity) and i'm curious to see what you all think.
i adore them both, but i'm definitley much more partial to sutton.

Idina was also in Rent, which has a crazy fan following as big as wicked
Ugh, Kathy Voytko blows both of them out of the water. Seriously, the woman is AMAZING (that voice!!). Not as nasily(sp?) as Sutton, and not as forceful as Idina. She's a happy medium, who deserves to be a household name. But if I had to choose I'de pick Sutton. She's a cutepie!
I would say, first and foremost because of Idina's shows, like blucat said, which have a MUCH larger fan following than millie or little women. Also Idina is more diva (which I don't mean in a bad way, but a good way), which many people go for. Idina is one of those American Idol voices like they talked about that time in the Times, even though I think Sutton was mentioned too. People these days go for Idina's type more...I think.
Both can be amazing, depending on the show they are in. I love Idina in RENT and Wild Party. I love Sutton in everything I've seen/heard her in.
I adore both of them. Sutton is the classic triple threat, and she seems very consistent. I think people love Idina more because she has more soul.
Sutton. I just like her voice, her acting and her dancing better. She's an amazing triple threat.
I love Idina, but truthfully I think Sutton is better. In everything I've seen her in, she put everything and more in her performances. I've seen Idina a few times when not everything was there...I just think Sutton is...better... And like My Fair Lady said, she is an amazing triple threat.
And the posts on BroadwayWorld go 'round and 'round, 'round and 'round, 'round and 'round....
Idina is prettier.
I *think* I love them both equally, but in different ways. It's really quite difficult to compare them.
It seems to me (and I may be waaay off here) that Idina's fans span more mediums(?). From what I can tell, Idina has many more male fans than Sutton does. Also, one of my friend's mom is a HUGE Idina fan. She also knows who Sutton is and has heard her/seen her, but isn't as big a fan. Idina is definitely edgier than Sutton, while Sutton has a sort of "All-American Sweetheart" type persona. Therefore, maybe it makes it "cooler" for people(who aren't neccesarily loyal theatre fans) to love Idina. I don't know, this is just me groping in the dark. I'm probably totally wrong. Obviously, the fact that Idina's two biggest shows have kind of crossed into the mainstream definitely help her popularity.
However, Sutton's fanbase IS pretty strong and completely and utterly loyal to her. Have no fear, some of Sutton's fans are pretty rabid!
I have more to say, but I can't put it into words.
Sutton is very much throwback to the older musical theater actress and classic voices (even classic belts), whereas Idina is much more modern, with her rock voice. Rock/pop musicals just tend to be more popular nowadays.
Sutton would never get cast as Maureen, but Idina would never get cast as Millie. (I'm just saying how showbiz works, although they are both probably capable of the other role.)

They are two totally different people. Different sounds, they play different types of roles. I'm not even sure I would try to compare them. As for why Idina has a stronger fanbase, I second what everyone else has said. But I'm a HUGE Sutton fan!
While both of them are definitely belters and have an amazing stage presence, they have completely different techniques, styles, personnas. I adore them both for different reasons.
Honestly though, I prefer Sutton as a Broadway performer. I enjoy Idina's own music, and when she is being herself rather than playing a role.
I had never seen Sutton in anything, but I've read nothing but amazing things about her. So, I saw "Little Women" last week and I was less than impressed. She seemed to be just going through the motions. Maybe it was because her staring vehicle got axed quickly, but that doesn't mean you can half ass a performance.

Ahhh, my two favorite divas. I love them both equally for many reasons. Trying to pick my favorite would be like a mother attempting to choose her favorite child.
Idina has a much larger fan base due to her body of work. Rent and Wicked are both pop culture phenomenons. Whereas Sutton is definitely more known inside the theatre community.

Yeah, Carrie kicks serious ass. She's going to be all over the TV this coming week.

I don't particularly care for either of them. I'll take Sherie Rene Scott, Carolee Carmello, or Rachel York over either of them any day!

Sutton's classic voice gives me chills. It is so pure and flawless.

Sutton and Idina have one thing in common-they sound good on recordings and suck live.
LucilleandLeo.... I completely disagree... while i've only seen Idina and Sutton live once each, both of them are spectacular live... especially Idina... i'll even go as far as that she's better live than on recording... and Idina is much more versatile than Sutton, I believe, because Idina does television, movies, broadway and pop/rock... while right now... Sutton is purely broadway... thats the difference between their fan bases

Just my opinion. Saw Idina in Wicked and Aida. She couldn't stay in tune to save her life. Sutton was mediocre live in Millie. You can visit the Little Women-What Went Wrong? thread to read my comments on Sutton for that particular show.
I agree that alot of it is the shows they've been in. Idina has been in RENT and Wicked which both have an enormous fan base (with a large portion being teenagers). Since the teenage population is perhaps the largest group in the fanbases and Wicked is more targeted for the younger audience, its not that much of a surprise that she has recieved more recognition then Sutton. I personally like them both just fine and I think they both have great voices but since Sutton's show's have been considerably less popular and more directed towards an adult audience it's slightly understandable that she isn't getting as much attention.
i thnk CurtainUp said it well. they are two diff. people. its like apples and oranges.
i personally like the old musical style and sound, therefor, i LOVE sutton. I still like Idina too, but more as a contemporary singer, when she does her solo stuff.
also, sutton embodies the "triple threat" phrase better because she dances more than Idina (not saying that Idina cant dance, but sutton won that Astire award for Millie and millie was more of a dance show than wicked)
as for Idina having more fans, i thnk Sutton has a lot as well, we're just not as crazy/loud. (not that theres anything wrong with that. but they are more vocal than the Suttonites )
