Hesione in Triumph? um, Als isnt that old not even middle-aged.
Both Michele Pawk and Alix Korey played Hesione on Broadway, and they are only two and five (?) years older than Alice, respectively.
And I'm pretty sure no one has ever called Alice "Als" in her entire life...
And Alice is definitely middle-aged.

I always thought she would be good as FANNY BRICE in Funny Girl.
But then again.. .I also think Idina and Ana Gasteyer would be good in those roles too....

EVITA!!!!!
I love and miss Alice. I wish she would come back to New York. I'm all for her band, but Broadway needs her now and then.
Currently on Broadway she could be in:
Chicago: Roxie or Velma
Wicked: Elphaba (Not ideal, but I would love to hear her rock out in those songs)
Pajama Game: Babe
I'd also like to see her do:
Sunday in the Park with George: Dot
Anyone Can Whistle: Fay
Into the Woods: The witch or the baker's wife
Passion: Fosca
(Can you tell I'd like to see her do more Sondheim?)
Evita: EVA!
Funny Girl: Fanny
Marvin Trilogy: Trina
There are so many more!

I saw her as Mrs. Walker in Pittsburgh and if the show is ever back on Broadway sometime soon, I say the part should be hers, she was fabulous.
Eva would be fabulous for her as well, as has been mentioned.
Even though she's a bit old, I'd love to see her play Maureen in RENT at least once, that version of "Take Me or Leave Me" with Anthony Rapp that she did was priceless and I'd love to just hear her wail it out with an equally powerful Joanne.
Cathy in Last 5 Years, which has also been mentioned.
I'll just end it like everyone else, I don't care who or what she's playing, just bring her back!

Posted: 2/24/06 at 4:56pmShe would be great as either Queenie OR Kate in Lippa's Wild Party...also I would love to see her as Susan in Tick Tick Boom or Dot is Sunday in the Park with George

Emily has definitely been referred to as "Ems" in her life, but Alice is definitely not Als. Sounds like someone with a lisp trying to say "Alice".
She hasn't really hit middle age... she's kind of in that weird transition.
Glad I stirred up some conversation, though.

I'm glad to see this stirred up conversation as well. Alice posts have seemed to be lacking here and lately and I'm glad she still has her fans. Let's start our own Alice campaign! Someone should be writing a show for this talent!
BTW, I believe she has hit or is about to hit middle age, but she could easily play MUCH younger. She has the skin of someone in their late 20's. She's so versatile in her look, acting, and singing. I think she can do it all!

She would be an incredible Eva.
I would love to see her as Queenie in either Wild party, preferably LaChiusa's.
I think her and Michael Arden would be perfect in john&jen.

BobbyBubby, I agree. I'd pay good money to see Alice as Queenie.

I saw Alice in The Baker's Wife last summer at Paper Mill Playhouse. What a wonderful production, so close but still so far away for so many people. I'd love to see Stephen Schwartz bring it to Broadway, intact. To hear Alice sing Meadowlark... is a gift.
I was in Hartford two weeks ago to see 'The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber' concerts. What an amazing group of talented people. It would be nice if one of their stops was a little closer to NYC.

Eva, for the love of God!!!
And I really love the idea of her as Dot in Sunday in the Park...; she's such an amazing actress, I'd definitely love to see her in that role.
As for The Baker's Wife...I suffered through it three times at Papermill. The cast was phenomenal, don't get me wrong, and Alice was particularly amazing, but there's a reason this show flopped. Some of the songs are, obviously, very pretty, but the show itself is dreadfully boring. The book really needs a lot of work, especially the second act; it just draaaaags...
The biggest problem I had with the Papermill production was that Alice had to mix - I'm assuming because of some musical direction and not out of necessity because that b*tch can sang - "Before my past, once again, can blind me..." It was hugely disappointing, especially since the whole song had just been building up and I was ready to hear her let it rip(-ley...hahaha), but alas...
I could definitely go for her as Fantine, again, too.
Following suit...I don't really care what she does as long as it's something and it's close to New York or New Jersey (...and she gets to belt her face off).

Posted: 2/25/06 at 2:19amAlice as Roxie would be genius. There is nothing like seeing Alice Ripley in a role that fits her. I saw her in Baker's Wife and I nearly threw myself onto the stage after Meadowlark. Truly stunning. A great vocalist, but most of all, a stunning actress.

Posted: 2/25/06 at 3:13amI miss Alice. I will have to agree her appearance in Little Shop was amazing. I was very fortunate to see it. She does need a comeback. And Eva Peron would be a great role for her.

um shineon, your comment "but Alice is definitely not Als" is so wrong - have you listened to their Unsuspecting Hearts CD, the song "Friendship" contains the line "You'll never find two other gals compatible as Em & Als"
---
Dude, it was to rhyme with the previous lyric. "You'll never find two other gals..." People don't actually call her Als. They call her Al.
Also, I think it depends on what you call middle aged. I'd say hitting 50 is "over the hill". 40 is the new 20! Haven't you learned anything from Hollywood!

what do YOU call her ShineOn? ive never met her, but i imagine that I would never be so bold to call her Als or Al just Ms. Ripley, or Your Majesty.
Do you think she would follow Audra MacDonald's example and branch out into straight plays and/or Shakespeare? She would be a good Titania in "Midsummer Night's Dream" or a great Maggie the Cat in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof".

I was referring to the production in DC that she was supposed to star in but withdrew from...

I usually just call her Alice. It IS her name. And if you ever called her Your Majesty in my presence, I'd probably puke.
