So how many people have actually seen the show? Or is this a case of 'loving the cast recording' and then 'loving the show'..

Posted: 7/15/04 at 6:38pmI think Leslie Uggams would make a fabulous Caroline. It would also help ticket slaes a little bit. Is there a place for Ben Vereen to fit in? In Chuck Cooper's role, perhaps? I think Sheryl Lee Ralph would also make a great Caroline. And althought is whole name escapes me, Mitchell Federan, or whoever played Young Peter in TBFO really would be an incredible Noah---this kid has tons of talent...I'd love to see him in a more difficult acting role.

The only problem with Uggams is that, although she looks great, she's in her 60's and Caroline is supposed to be 39 (it clearly says so in the show).
I'm not sure Vereen has the vocal chops for the role -- Cooper's a (nearly) operatic bass-baritone and some sections of his music sound right out of "Porgy and Bess". It's also VERY rangy. Vereen would act it well, though.

It is about a black 39-year old single mother, who is a maid for a white Jewish family in 1063 Louisiana right on the cusp of the social changes the 60s had in store; just as everything begins to change...
and i have seen it twice. and a hear it every day. :)

Click on the link below for the HBO Buzz Clip of "Caroline" -- it gives a nice overview of the story of the show, clips and interviews with the creative team -- the link for it is at the bottom of the page:

Posted: 7/16/04 at 1:11pmI severely doubt it would come to the UK, certainly not in a commercial production, but at the National Theatre or even somewhere smaller like the Almeida, it would be nice. Especially in the Cottesloe.

Posted: 7/16/04 at 1:33pmDo people really think it'll close soon? I really disliked the show but I didn't know that it was doing poor enough that people are already predicting a closing of it.

Posted: 7/16/04 at 1:59pmLast week it only made $361,959. It hasn't made much more than $400,000 a week for a long time. I guess the Eugene O'Neill is a smallish house for a musical, but still. Caroline is a good-looking production with a cast of 17 and a good-sized orchestra. I doubt it's making money.

Posted: 7/16/04 at 6:47pmIts only been three weeks since it last cracked $400K and business around the 4th of July was bad for almost every show (and been sluggish since). I actually do think it's still doing a bit better than break-even (which I'm guessing is in the $300 - 350K range). Barring a big slide in the next few weeks, I still think it'll run through the end of the year.

PLEASE GO SEE IT !!!! I sound like a real "Caroline" shill, but the show needs support !!! Saw it again today, and it gets better and better. Chuck Cooper came out after the show and was telling everyone "tell your friends about us", so you kind of felt that they are getting a bit desperate. Its such a great show, and really needs to be seen !!!
Hey, can we make this the "SUPPORT CAROLINE" thread !!!???
