If other shows were done like sweeney..

what instruments would you assign the roles if you were to doyle-ify it

Rent: (hard to do since theres not alot of instruments in their band to begin with)
Mark- keyboards
Roger- guitar (obviously)
Angel- Percussion
Collins- bass,percussion
mimi- guitar
maureen- keyboards, bass
joanne-keyboards

DRS:
Lawrence- piano, violin, Banjo(for "Oklahoma?")
Freddy- Tuba, Percussion, Guitar
Andre- Piano, Trumpet
Muriel- Violin, cello
Christine- flute, cello
Jolene- Trumpet,percussion

"Grease," the fourth revival of the season, is the worst show in the history of theater and represents an unparalleled assault on Western civilization and its values. - Michael Reidel

I like the DRS ideas!

I'm consulting with my playbill listings of the orchestra

THE WOMAN IN WHITE

Marian-The Picolo....because it's a peppy instrument

Fosco-The Clarinet....because I don't know why.

Anne-The Violin....Because it is an instrument that can express and sound like sadness.

Walter-The Horn....because he is expressive.

Laura-The Piano....because she plays it anyway.

Glyde-The Percussion....because the percussion creates the eeriness of the piece, and he is the true villian of the story.

Fairlie-The Flute...because he is weak and the flute can sound weak if it wants to.

The ensmble would do the rest.

How to properly use its/it's: Its is the possessive. It's is the contraction for it is...

Its funny when you think about how many Sondheim shows really lend themselves to this method.

I think the John Doyle method would work exceptionally well with Assassins.

If they did this with Seussical the Cat in the Hat would play the hornerberizeslozenkliginshpieler and Horton would play the tubarolicasticastsker. :)

I couldn't resist...but I do like this topic...

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF

Tevye-The Guitar
Golde-The Tuba
Yente-The Lute
Tzeital-The Clarinet
Motel-The Flute
Hodel-The Percussion
Perchik-The French Horn
Chava-The Violin
Fyedka-Oboe

OY! Please no more shows where the actors play the instruments. Musicians need work, too!

^I definately agree with you...I could see the charcters playing the instruments I've listed above, but it would be campy in them and awful...it doesn't work for most shows...especially the ones I listed above, IMO. I look at this as a fun way to try to match up instruments to the personalities of characters.

Guys, I'm assuming this thread is strictly hypothetical, and jonartdesigns has no plans to storm into the theatre, show the orchestra the door, and start tossing instruments at the cast.

Cool it!

I was just thinking about a Doyle-ized Assassins the other day:

Proprietor: Keyboards, percussion
Balladeer: Guitar, banjo, mandolin
John Wilkes Booth: Trumpet
Leon Czolgosz: Clarinet
John Hinckley: Guitar, alto sax
Charles Guiteau: French horn
Giuseppe Zangara: Accordion [a blatant revival Pirelli ripoff... sue me.]
Samuel Byck: Harmonica
Squeaky Fromme: Cello, piccolo
Sara Jane Moore: Trombone

John Doyle, in addition to Mahoganny, Lucia di Lammermoor and Amadeus, is working on Stephen Sondheim's A Litle Night Music. Sondheim said that he was looking forward to it, having seen a previous actor-musician production of the show, it is a perfect show for this approach.

I was also going to add that Doyle has already directed an award-winning production of Fiddler on the Roof, which was a brilliant rethink of the show.

If other shows were done like Sweeney, I wouldn't pay money to see it. I expect a full orchestra at any show I go to, with live musicians playing the orchestra parts, and the actors on stage acting, doing their lines, etc. Not both at the same time.

VonTussleGirl, I think those instruments are perfect for Assassins, ecspecially Czolgisz, he always seemed like a clarinet.
If Percy Blakeney were in Les Mis....

Percy: Sink me! If it isn't Javvurt!
Javert: Zsah-vair, it's pronounced Zsah-vair.
Pecry: But it's spelled J-A-V-E-R-T Javvurt.
Javert: Repeat after me Zsah...Zsah....
Percy: Oh! Zsa-Zsa! Like the Gabor sister! Well I personally have always prefered Eva.
Javert: (Looks for gun)

Wow, you don't know how diffuclt Doyle and Travis' jobs must be until you try to distribute the orchestral parts among characters in a show.

FOLLIES
Phylis- Violin, Clarinet
Ben- PercussionDrums, Piano
Sally- Oboe, Flute
Buddy- Trumpet, PercussionDrums
Carlotta- Trombone, Cello
Hattie- Bass, Violin
The Whitmans- DrumsPercussion
Stella- Trumpet, Tuba
Heidi- Harp, Violin

The younger counterparts can play in a song their respective counterpart is in. For example, durring "Could I Leave You?" You Phylis could play the violin. In some cases, they actors will play while they sing. (Ex- "Broadway Baby", Hattie could play the violin solo while she sings.)

Wow, I'm going into too much detail about this. Sad it isn't happening.

re: If other shows were done like sweeney..

Here's the problem with the "musicians need work too" arguemnt. If they had to hire full orchestras, they coulnd't afford to do the shows at all.

At the theatre where I work, the musicals use a MAXIMUM of three musicians per show. It's a very small theatre (180 seats). The choice is to do musicals with very few musicians, or not do musicals at all.
