what did you think about the music? I haven't seen the musical yet (though I'm planning to as soon as I've got enough to fly myself to New York :) but I'm already in love with the soundtrack! My coworker at UMGD let me listen to a couple tracks and Phil Collins has done an AMAZING job with the music and lyrics...I can't wait to hear it live! I checked out the website www.tarzanthemusical.com and you can actually listen to the music online. Anyone else heard the music or seen the production?
I saw the show and I own the CD. I, personally enjoyed the show, although though I've heard some mixed things about it. The music was fine. It wasn't bad, but, I didn't like fall in love with it. I thought the sets, costumes and lighting were just terrific though.

Technically the show is pretty amazing, but the plot isn't very exciting. The act II climax is barely that. It is enjoyable though and interesting to watch. The music is more fun live so if you enjoyed the cd you will love the show
I had fun at the show. Great performers. But after all a show for children mostly. I think Collins' score is great.
I buy EVERY cast recording that comes out -- really. I'm having a real debate with myself on whether or not it's worth buying this. I knew when I saw the show that once I got the cd I would listen to it once and probably put it on a shelf to not listen to again for a very long time. On the other hand, I'm a completist...
What to do...what to do...
Well, if you hated the show so much, don't buy it, i like the CD. I understand that the show doesn't work for everyone though.

How did you like the set??? eww That was the only thing IMO that was totally disastrous about this show. EWW those ugly ugly green vines which represent a jungle in absolutely no way.

The set was pretty weird, definitly a weak link, but the show was fun.
The show itself is heavily flawed, especially the book. Act I is dreadfully long in that it is too exposition heavy. Act II picks things up a bit, but most of it is short lived. I enjoyed many of the technical aspects, with the exception of the set, which after the first hour left me with a numbing green headache.
As for the score, it has a couple of good ballads and the songs from the film are shown in an interesting new light, but for the most part it is horribly bland percussive pop music.
i think both the score and show are great. i do say there are some dry parts in the show aka serious moments but the music i think is great. each song has a great beat to it.
ljay - I agree. VERY shilly.
I saw the show and sat in the very front row as I did student rush.
While SOME of it was visually stunning, the show was very bland. I didn't care about any of the characters. I loved Turk in the movie, and I hated Turk on stage. I loved "Trashin' the Camp" in the movie - and I hated it on stage.
A lot of the flying/swinging was very uneseccary.
But anyway, back to the score...
A couple of the new songs were OK. Goes to show what kind of an impact Tarzan had on me - I can't even remember the names of the songs. I think they involved Tarzan's mother. I think I remember liking everything the mother sang.
Everything Jane's father sang was horrible. Everything the gorilla leader guy sang was DREADFUL. And I hated Jane's character on stage.
The best part of the show was watching the kid Tarzan. Not because I was engaged in the show, but because I was impressed with the kid actor.
I paid $20 to see TARZAN. It wasn't worth $20. It was worth $15.

I have a question: In the movie was this cute elephant which had a lot of nice jokes. Did they cut this character? I personally thought that this elephant was the greatest thing in the movie. Okay could be hard to have an elephant on stage next to the apes who should be twice as big.
CapnHook, why not be thankful that you paid $ 20 and not $40 like some other Disney shows that don't offer student rush.
Elephant character was cut.
Be grateful? Of course I'm grateful I didn't have to pay $40 to see this crap. It wasn't even worth $20, however. It was worth $15.
The show is a mess. Most of the new songs on the new CD are terrible as they are in the show. I am so surprised Disney let this green blob get as far as it did. I think Bob Crowley got in way too deep. He's a brilliant designer, but apparently couldn't direct traffic. The book is probably the weakest part of the show. David should just throw in the towl... or has he already done that?

There are many things in my life that I regret doing. Spending $75 to see Tarzan is on the top of the list. Perhaps the worst "Hit" to play on Broadway. A totally childish diaster.

I actually am not sure which to blame more - the book or the music. The book, at least, is based on the movie -- the writers can be faulted for not fixing it up more, but the roots of that problem go back to the original film. The music though - God, who told Phil Collins he could write a Broadway score?
Quasi, one of the first things I said while watching the show was "Where's the elephant?" I miss him too, but I guess they figured turning humans into monkeys was difficult enough--they didn't need to do it to an elephant and have it be too much like Lion King.
I still miss him though. I realized they had to change the "final battle" without the elephant to storm the ship.
The music is okay, nothing less, nothing more.

Actually it was the movie soundtrack brought me to the show.
I agree that Phil Collins did a good job on the stage version as well. But I felt "Nothing" after I saw that!
The music is good but the others...no comment. But it is true that live music is a little better than OBC..

To me Tarzan is weakly written and even more weakly plotted.
I actually rank this below Lestat which was lousy, but in a trashy fun way.
Tarzan has some fun aerials, a nice cast, a cute enough lead and no humor to speak of.
It has a bad book with mediocre songs. Skip the disc and buy Songs From an Unmade Bed or something really obscure instead.
